Talk about whatever you want to here, but stay correct

This topic has been in my head for some weeks now... But I always forgot it when visiting this board (or I was just too lazy...) Anyway, I saw that there's a similar thread at the RVP forums - and now I stole it

One of the most impressive and insane drum performances I ever heard is Cyberwaste from Fear Factory. In my opinion, Raymond has amazing double bass skills, but on this song he goes completely nuts with his feet AND his hands! Wow! Air drumming anyone?

Gene's playing on the two Death records he did is also very cool. I love his approach to the cymbals!

And right now, my vote for the best drum performance on an entire album goes to... SYNCHESTRA! Ryan did such an awesome job. To be honest, I didn't expect it to turn out that great. The songs are very varied, and so are the drums. Straight-ahead rock drumming, more proggy stuff, fucking heavy double bass attacks... It's all there.

Discuss!

Maybe too obvious, but i choose "Alien". Really.

"La villa strangiato" by Rush is a favourite non-Hoglan track.

Oh man, what a thread...

Where to start? :?

Punkrock:

Brooks Wackerman (Bad Religion) - son of Chad Wackerman (Zappa), simply amazing, enough said

Jordan Burn (Strung Out) - amazingly powerfull and almost metal style, great double kick chops, cool fills

Metal:

Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) - great right foot (listen to Sea Of Madness on Somewhere In Time), allround totally recognizable style

Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Voodoocult, Grip Inc., Fantômas, Vivaldi, Apocalyptica...) - one of THEE inventors of extreme metal drumming, not very technical, but one of the best if not the best straight forward 4/4 thrash player, totally unique and recognizable style, unbelievable stage presence (especially considering he's a drummer). Grip Inc. in front of more than 100.000 metalheads on the Dynamo 1995 festival was an almost religios experience for me.

Gene Hoglan (THE MAN!) - next to Lombardo THEE other inventor of current extreme metal drumming for me. Favourite performace? 1000 Eyes? Shitstorm? Down And Under? I don't know, there's too many...

And then you have all the current technical and/or fast metal players like Mike Portnoy, Tomas Haake, Sean Reinert, Bobby Jarzombek, Flo Mournier, Reno Kiilerich, Nick Barker, Asgeir Mickelson, Derek Roddy, Tony Laureano,...

Honorable mentions as a MUST: Mike Bordin (in Faith No More) - left hander with a totally unique "tribal" playing style and drum setup

and

talking about innovators:

Michel "Away" Langevin (Voivod) - for basically everything he did in Voivod and especially on the album Nothingface

Sir Ryan (DUH!) he's up there in the pantheon of great rock/metal players but I need to hear a couple more of his perormances for a final "Judgement"

Jazz:

OK here we go, high-end drummers:

Neil Peart (what, Rush aren't jazz? I don't care) , Vinnie Colaiuta (isn't it cool that he played on the last Megadave album?), Dave Weckl, Terry Bozzio (insane!), Mike Mangini, Billy Cobham, Dennis Chambers,...

and probably today's best drummer: Virgil Donati.

Another honorable mention: Marco Minnemann - the best drum performance I've personally witnessed, EVER. I had the pleasure to see him on a drum workshop and I was unable to figure out 70-80% of his playing. UNBELIEVABLE "interdepence" skills, playing four different patterns at once.
And a totally cool and down to earth guy.

Best website for drumming enthusiasts (IMO): http://www.drummerworld.com/

Umm, what was this thread about btw? :?

I think it would be helpful to mention specific songs. I know for example only one performance of Virgil Donati (Steve Vai @Astoria DVD) which didn´t impress me much.

I just don´t know where to start when i would like to check out the listed drummers.

The intro to Dream Theater - Honor Thy Father is fun, even though I'm sure Mike Portnoy can play better and there are better examples, but this is the main one I usually think of.

John Bonham - I have a live performance of Moby Dick on DVD. Fantastic stuff.

My other favourite drummer was Ian Paice from Deep Purple.

All of Lateralus - Danny Carey is a GOD. Powerful, dynamic, subtle and oh so tasteful.... plus he has the best sounding kit and cymbals EVER.

IMHO :P
