I'm always amazed that some people don't like SOAD. I love em. I love many bands, but can understand why other people wouldn't, but with SOAD i just always thought they had nothing to not like about them.

Except the Steal This Album! release. That was carppy for the most part.

I was hooked on em jsut for that part in Sugar that goes;
"I SIT! / In my desolute room / no liiights / no muuusic / JUST ANGER!!! / i killed everyone / and their away forever / BUT NOW I'M FEELING BETTER!!!"

So, yeah.

This album is fairly damn cool. It's pretty much the same as what I expected from SOAD - unexpected stuff haha. Not many bands can make you spontaneously burst out into laughter just by having songs that make unexpected turns. Vicinity of Obscenity made me crack up. BANANA BANANA BANANA TERRACOTTA PIE! HEY!.... cue 80s porno funk section.

Seriously, but, this album is wicked. If ya didnt like the last album you're not going to like this one but.

Man, I actually think Steal This Album! is a killer album. "36" is the only SOAD song I don't like, it's from 1995, one of their first demos, it's just not very good. Luckily it's like 50 seconds long, so...who cares. The rest of the CD is wicked. Not sure why anyone would dislike it at all if they like their other albums.

I liked some of the songs, but a lot of it did scream "album out-take!" to me. I liked around half of it, but the fact that it was cobbled together which made in quite uncohesive, and the fact that I plain didn't like a good half of the songs soured it for me.

You do realize it's not an outtake album, right?

It's not. Serj wanted to release a new album 6 months to a year after Toxicity was released because they had recorded a ton of songs. That was the plan, similar to what they've done with Mezmerize and Hypnotize. Unfortunately before they had a chance to release a new CD all those songs were leaked onto the net in shoddy, unmastered/mixed form.

So the band decided to release the songs still, but they decided to go and change a lot of the songs so that the fans got something a little different. Daron's vocals became more prominent, "Nuguns" was once called "Defied You" and they straight up re-recorded a whole different song, they changed the chorus to "Thetawaves," and basically just tweaked a whole lot of different things.

The good thing is that we got new versions of the songs, but we also got the leaked versions. The quality isn't great, but it's still cool. Plus two unreleased songs were leaked, too: "Cherry" and "Blue Dye." You can also consider "Defied You" and unreleased song, as well, since the vocal melody and lyrics are completely different from "Nuguns."

I think this concept of it being an outtake album has people thinking instantly before even hearing it that it's not going to be that good. It's unfortunate because the album is awesome, in my opinion.

well, although I thought it's a B-side Album, I still like it. I bought all SOAD records so far. :D And after a couple listens I know that I'll definitely buy Hypnotize too!

Well, it looks like i did get some of the background info wrong, and I never held the release against the band, i just didn't think that many of the songs were the business.

so I picked up Hypnotize today. After quite a few spins I still really like it a lot, even more than Mezmerize at the moment. It's a digipack again like Mezmerize...AND you can join both digipacks to one big double digipack, I like that.

It's an excellent CD. I just hope they don't re-release it as a true double album with bonus tracks or something lame like that. There was supposed to an instrumental track called "Hezze" on this album that was left off at the last minute. No idea why, though. Hopefully it's not being saved for any future re-release/special edition.

I DID hear that Hezze WILL be on a different release so I hope it's gonna be a Single. They've re-released Toxicity once with a Bonus CD so now I'm worried :?
