Just an offshoot from the computer game thread. Is using FAQs for games cheating? Me personally, i don't see nothin wrong with it, it's not like you're entering a code to give you infinite anything, and some games you NEED FAQs or strategy guides.

thoughts...?

hmmm....

tricky. i use them, and cheats. but still technically bad, i guess.

i remember final fantasy seven.... i would have been fucked without the walkthrough.

sometimes they're necessary, though. publishers often provide very sparse manuals with games these days in a heinous attempt to get you to lay out another tenner on so called 'strategy guides'

villains

yeah...I'd never do an FF without a walkthrough! Of course FAQ's etc are kinda cheating..but I don't really see it as wrong - it's all about what you want to get out of it :)

totally agree. but the way i see it, the guide helped me find the cool stuff, but i myself put the effort in to actually do it... and as any FF& player will know, NO amount of help from a strategy guide will help you against the likes of Emerald and Ruby weapons!

I went through FF7 all by myself but used a walkthough when I played it the second time to find the "Knights of the Round" spell or whatever that one was called. That one kicked ass. And I think lots of Chocobos had to screw for that one.

when playing after the first couple of times... i used a cheat cart and had ultima weapon, knights of the round, maximum limit breaks from the start....

much destruction

Well, most games today are being created with the intention of having a guide with it. That's why games come out with an "official" guide right on the day of release.

I don't think FAQs are a bad thing if they are used occasionally and don't contain spoilers. However, having your face in the FAQ for the entirety of a game kinda defeats the purpose of playing it.

What's wrong with people helping other people playing a game?
If you don't want to use them, don't use them.
I think they're great, especially the free ones written by random people. That's the power of internet. Anonymous people helping other anonymous people for free.

Sometimes you need a little hint, Like in Metal Gear Solid 2 I would have not known that there were so many of those bomb sensors that you have to Snipe in order to cross that bridge thing.

But I never rely on FAQs completely nor do I read ahead and ruin the games for me.

I figure, it's better than just throwing the game on the shelf and never playing it again. I'll only use it when I'm really stuck though.

I have a policy, finish the game then look at the FAQ to get all the secrets once I'm done. With some games I don't touch it at all (ie. most nintendo games).

My cousin used to cock on about finishing all these games and he'd show off about it... till my other friend told me he cheats... crap

i don't like cheaters... i'm constantly shouting at my brother because he cheats, if ever i'm in his room and spy some cheats written down, i throw them away, he NEEDS to learn!
