Physicist, every SYL after City...

I said bad production, not sub-par production. More or less all contemporary music has a decent enough production, especially Devs since he is apparently very good at production and using his ears

And for that matter you might want you get your own checked, no offense. City sounds poop compared to T.N.B. which I think sounds great

Geez guys! Devy went a looong way from City to T.N.B. and so did the prod. They're different points of view, different styles and different sounds. From this point on it's up to the taste of each and every one of us. I think it's quite extreme to say that one is poop and the other's great. And for Pete's sake, how can anyone say that Alien has bad prod; really? Some might not like the thick layered wall of sound, but that's what makes Devy's music quite unique. Okay, sure Physicist is not the best prod up to date but it has some epicness in it (Kingdom, maybe?) and it doesn't make it a bad record, does it?
Also, he's always experimenting, writing music that goes from ballads to heavy metal and from atmospheric/ambient to rock'n roll. Whether one likes it or not tastes are not up for discussion. So waddya say? shake hands and listen to some DT with a mug of good ale? Love y'all!

Because it has. Everything sounds so muddy compared to the crystal clear sound of City.

When did I ever say that?

Well, does anyone else think Alien, SYL and TNB have bad prod? Personally I love the production on these albums. It has the kind of honesty the Dev brings to all of his work. Plus I think those records are made exactly like he wanted them to be: honest, crazy, fun and wall-of-sound-ish.
And truly, there's a lot of 'muddy sound' in City, especially in OMFG, Home Nucleonics and underneath the waves. But I think those are clear examples of the famous wall of sound.
And true, you didn't say Physicist was a bad album, but a lot of poeple think so, so I guess I misunderstood, sorry :)

wow really? city sounds a lot more... muffled/muddy than everything that comes after it, especially TNB (probably has the most clear sound of em all). i couldn't disagree more, Moni

Can't really hear how Alien or TNB is more muddy than City here either..

Question for the mods: Does every thread deteriorate into a SYL discussion, or just the really popular threads?

i have no idea how anyone can call City muffled, it's absolutely crystal clear and possibly the best-balanced mix in Dev's catalog (though Addicted and Infinity are surely close to that title as well).

i'm not big on the Alien production, as the guitar production, mix, and drums are lacking compared to City. i'm also eternally let down about "Love?" being edited for the final release, but that's for another discussion, i suppose!

Hehe, true! When SYL comes up I can't help myself :help: , I just love it so much. I guess I'm a hopeless romantic, looks like I'm not the only one <3

Almost never. Thank god.

Yeah, SYL Discussion gets off here gents. IF you want to continue, please kindly go to the SYL subforum. This is just a point for those still going on about a band that's been done for 5 years in a topic about a project that's nowhere near fruition that will definitely sound nothing like the aforementioned finished band.

It wasn't an SYL discussion, it was a production discussion, very relevant to any new Dev Band/Project.

I know a lot of people are made thick these days, but I thought they at least read what they were responding too

So, I'm imagining the cover art will be something cosmic, like a nebula. Or a cloud.
Mustn't get ahead of myself.

There is a whole subforum dedicated to discussing Devin productions, so an elaborate discussion (since that was happening here) on that would fit much better there instead of this thread. Feel free to continue it there.

O/T:
I'm wondering whether this will be released under the 'normal' Devin Townsend' moniker, or be called something else again.

i'm all for moderating off topicness, but isn't this pretty relevant? it was originally brought up to compare differences in production values. i believe both city & physicist were mentioned together. are we not allowed to talk about past albums anymore?

and last thing on syl since it was mentioned: the edit of love? is sooooo much better than the extended.

i was wondering that too. he has so many different ones. maybe another Devin Townsend presents. or if it is more like a colllaboration effort, Devin Townsend with/featuring/and Anneke.

damn it i need to stop thinking about this album, haven't even heard decon/ghost yet

I know, right? But it's hard not to wonder about Devin's new music (music even newer than the new music that hasn't been released yet) when he is always letting us in on his next big adventure...Epicloud...can't wait! :)
