I've always wondered this, but everyone's been so focused on SYL's dissolution, what was the motivation behind breaking up DTB?
Yes, this is probably a pretty noobish question. It's never really occured to me before.

Some of the older folk may be able to give you a better answer, but I think it was actually the same reason. Dev went on hiatus after The New Black because he was tired of the music business, which disbanded SYL of course. But it had pretty much the same consequence for the DTB.
I wasn't sure if there was a reason as specific as the reason behind SYL being broken up, but it's a bit confusing considering it was pretty much his solo stuff under a slightly different title, and of course he still plays DTB songs live.
Well, I believe one of the reasons the DTB was formed in the first place was to have a different band than SYL to bring the solo stuff live. And since his solo stuff wasn't the music that made Dev go on hiatus it's not really surprising to find these guys now assembled in the DTP (as well as for the live shows).
It's not the name that is so important to me, DTB just had such a great vibe as a band.
And Mike pulled of some great bass fills and stuff.

So, I'm way stoked for the description of how this is shaping up. I mean, heavy atmospheric guitar and clean singing. Sound pretty beautiful.

This, and the fact that Anneke's going to be handling vocals with him again. She's the absolutely perfect female counterpart to Dev's voice, IMO... the way they sound side-by-side on tracks like Awake!! is just unreal. Haven't even heard Deconstruction/Ghost/Ghost 2 yet and I'm already stoked beyond belief for this, haha.

on "I Really Love Korea" (the Korean bonus track on AE), Dev says the DTB was formed as a way of getting some friends from the Vancouver scene together to interpret his music (and obviously tour it). given that and the fact that AE is the human counterpart to SYL's Alien, i think the whole point was to have a direct balance against SYL; when it ceased to be, there was no longer a need for the other side — after all, Dev is doing the balance within the DTP now (see all the comments he made about writing Ghost when Decon became too nuts to handle).
I'm all for Dev releasing stuff under his name... dtp encompasess the fact that all four albums are one musical expression, kind of... it was his project. Devin Townsend Band was an entity to balance the entity of syl, and was a way of touring stuff without the need to do double sets with gene etc. Releasing as Devin Townsend he has the opportunity to retain the guest musician vibe of the DTP albums... doesn't mean he doesn't use guys from the DTB to play on shit or live with him, but means he has the freedom to have 8 drummers on record if he wanted to
it seems I now exist on this forum.., interesting turn of events

technically, synchestra is the human counterpart to Alien (the original working title was even "Human"). AE is sort of a counterpart to SYL S/T

Okay.
Now don't overproduce the album and don't go into atmospheric nonsense and maybe this album will outdo Ki and Deconstruction.
No offense, and I love you Dev.

Atmospheric nonsense? Over-produced, Ki and Deconstruction...? You know, I know opinions are opinions, and you supposedly mean no offense, but I need to state that I vehemently disagree. And intensely. With gusto.

The atmosphere and wall of sound is what we want.
And there's no point in having an album called Epicloud if you have neither.
Unless he changes the title.
