Fall

Very nice. Thanks! As someone else asked, how are these songs trickling out one at a time? Someone said they liked how it ends, I liked how it began.

Also: FUCK each and every one of you who has tried to divert this into YET ANOTHER "downloading" (off) topic thread. :patrol:  :furious:  :furious: :chain: :dead:

Seventy. Five. Dollars.

Is the cost of touring going to keep escalating to make everybody a living at that level? If so... who could possibly afford 75$ for a hoodie?

...then again...2 beers were 15$ for my friends. Just seems like prices keep rising... maybe it has no link, but then again...?

Anyways...

Stupid thing is though dude, I'd pay that much for a hoodie if I truly liked the artist and thought that by buying it, I was supporting them - the 'affording it' part wouldn't come until later when I looked at my bank account and realised I didn't have enough money for bills/food. Everything's getting more expensive nowadays, living is expensive. :(

Rob Zombie hoodies were £50 at Brixton in Feb, that's just a smidge over $75CAN. How can they get away with this bullshit?!

Greg Puciato wrote a long statement recently about downloading, he made some good point but i think he got one important thing wrong (in my opinion):

If you want to control downloading and go after illegal downloaders, as Mr. Puciato suggests as far as i understand, the price is that this can only be done with an overly controlled internet. if you want a free internet with all its benefits of free information for everyone (as seen in autocratic regimes like Egypt or the wikileaks-case for example), you just have to live with people downloading stuff for free (and some other, much more severe crimes like sharing plans for building bombs). I don't think that worries about musicians making a living are more important than a free internet is for our society. Some artists have always been rich, some others poor - which had never much to do with the quality of their art.

I think thats what Devin said many times: To pay for music means to support the artists in continuing to make the music i love. if i don't pay for it, the artist eventually has to quit doing records/playing shows and work in another job. Thats why i bought hundreds of cds and other stuff (for example a dtp-hoodie for 35 EUR = $ 50). Most recently i bought this CD from Thot (paid 15 EUR, i could name the prize myself), which could legally be downloaded for free in FLAC-quality.

Of course its bad for artists, producers, mixers, managers and so on that they get less money for the same work, but i think a free internet is much more important than that. I'm sure there are still too few people paying for stuff they could get for free but there are some strategies for motivating them and making them sensitive for the consequences. For example i think its a really good idea to stream a new album for some weeks for free, so everyone can listen to it in decent quality (but maybe cant save it easily on the iPhone). Add a possibility for downloading it in best quality (FLAC/WAV or whatever) immidiately and pay maybe 10 $ for it. Maybe you could do this shortly after mastering. why wait until CDs are pressed and promos sent out? Everyone could write a review, you don't need print magazines anymore. No leak can be faster and collectors can buy the CD with some nice bonus stuff a few weeks later.

PS: To add a little provocation - not meant personally of course: I think its unfair that always those who don't pay for the music can listen to it first! It makes me jealous that some journalists have already heard Deconstruction and Ghost and we, the fans, have to wait! To be clear: I'm not complaining at all to you Dev, it's perfectly clear that you do everything for us fans.

How are profits divided with merch? Once you've broken even, does the rest of the money go to the band?
And deftones are a fairly high-profile band, so perhaps that plays into it somewhat. Not enough to warrant a $75 price tag maybe, but still.

To be honest, the bootleg shit outside was nicer. Probably trying to finance his next crummy film 8)

I noticed Iron Maiden had similar asking prices for their merch a couple of months back. While I treated myself to a shirt, the thought crossed my mind that keeping that plane up to scratch must really be expensive.
Mind you, AC/DC, Motorhead, Megadeth, and various other "big & marketable" bands were asking similar as well, so really it should come as no surprise. Just buy your shirts in the shops, a fraction off the concert price.

PS Fall is awesome. :D

It's times like this that I'm glad I can cope with getting the CD and a T-shirt.

Leather jacket and flannel shirt keep me cosy enough without a hoodie (also means, more beer and extra T-shirt money!). As a musician, I'm quite happy having enough money to break even bills wise alongside working at a crappy job and surviving on as little as possible. Things are only an issue when your losing money.

OT: I've just listened to Fall and decided I prefer Drench. I'm really excited to have Ghost and Ghost 2 playing on my iPod through my speaker pillow to sleep to. The more Kat Epple goodness I have to chill out to, the better, deeper, satisfying and ultimately vivid (dream-wise) sleep I'm going to have.

It will be a glorious time for neurotic insomniacs everywhere!

Fall

Late to the discussion, but I gave this a listen aaaaaaaaaaaand... love it! The ending is great; I wasn't sure if we'd being seeing any 'The Way Home'-esque vocals from Dev on either Ghost album (mostly because they might not fit in with how mellow the music's supposed to be) but the way he incorporated it is great. Perfect climax to a very relaxing track. Not sure which record I'm excited more for, honestly (Ghost 1 or 2); what I've heard from both sounds great. Two totally different vibes, but both so atmospheric and layered...

Fall will be on repeat for a while, I can assure you that. :D

who would pay for that given http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=deftones+hoodie ? The music industry is kaput. Gonna stick to armenian idol from now on.

I think the argument would be that the gig merch is official, but it doesn't cost any more to make.

DTP's stuff is average price, most bands I've seen the past few years are charging £10-15 for shirts and £25-35 for hoodies, which is fair in my opinion with inflation taken into account. £20 totally takes the piss for a tshirt that isn't that great. I remember when tshirts were a fiver though....*lé sigh*
