"But d00d, why isn't teh monster Geeene Hoglan drumming? He was teh awesome in SYL, and Dev needs to BRING BACK SYL.

Wat aboot a new All Hail the New Flesh?
Or a new Oh My Fucking God?
Or a new Detox?
Or a new Home Nucleonics?

Hell, how aboot teh Dev records all the SYL albums again?"

If I hear the above one more time, I'll fuckin crack someone's head.

The reason why I put a grin on there was to signify a joke. I have no doubt in my mind that whatever is on Decon is going to be completely new, and Dev was not looking to his previous work for inspiration/duplication. Nor would I ask him to. As for Gene Hoglan, that was a presumption on my part, and now I do not care that he isn't drumming on the album.

Dev, just wondering what gear you plan on using for Decon? Even though you said that you disnt really like the production and mix of SYL, I gotta say that its my favorite guitar sound out of almost all your work. At least for the heavy music part of your stuff. It just sounds so huge and not fizzy at all. But I was wondering if your going to be going the digital route like the AXE (assuming you still have it) or are you going to bring out the good ol tube amps and rip it up?

Axe fx all the way.

There's SO MUCH guitar kerwanker-y on Decon, that I need to be doing it into the wee hours...

I think it is totally normal for people to have SYL-based expectations for 'Deconstruction,' simply because SYL is their reference to what heavy Dev sounds like. If you are a huge fan of SYL, then of course you're going to want to a little more of that.

However, even if Dev reformed SYL, it would not sound like the 'City' or 'Alien' SYL anymore. I think that was apparent with 'The New Black.' I'm not sure of the exact reasoning behind that album title, but to me it means a re-envisioning of what is considered a constant. Black is black, right? Everyone knows what black is. In this case, SYL is SYL, right? Well, not if you look at it like this...

I also took the title as a sort of wink to Metallica's so-called 'black' album, since it also was an album that signaled a change in direction. But holy shit, did I digress...

Recordings are snapshots of a certain place and time, and represent where an artist is in their lives at that particular point. That is, if they are honest with their music. Dev's head wasn't always in a good place on those SYL albums, so in that respect, I hope to never hear anything like that again from him, because he seems to be in a really good place now. Plus, I've always been one of those guys that listens to a new album, and think "That was awesome," and then wonder what the next one will sound like almost immediately. I love what is in front of me, but the anticipation of what is to come is on equal footing.

I think it would be great to see Dev and the SYL guys get back together and make music, just not as SYL or as an attempt to make music like that again. Maybe a bluegrass record or something. lol

I agree that its reasonable for people to be comparing Decon to SYL without it being out, but hearing little snippets of tracks like 'Stand' on YouTube (Hey wasn't there a 'Traestorz' or something on the YouTube page?) it sounds similar to SYL in terms of Dev's general guitar playing style, but it also sounds different. A bit more refined, mature, etc. If City was an album of bitter, teen/young adult Dev angst, from what's on YouTube, Decon sounds like an album of midlife crisis. :P

In the best possible sense, that is. The sheer wankery in the first bit of the Symphony demos is buying a Harley, etc.

Axe fx... so it's entirely possible that Decon will sound quite different from anything we've heard before, as the sonic possibilities of Axe FX are nearly infinite... someone could get lost for months just playing around with the different sounds in that thing.

Now I'm *really* intrigued.

Please pardon this feeble question, but would a 12-string electric guitar be considered for Decon?
