Well, I'm not really surprised Hoglan wasn't "chosen" to drum on Deconstruction. Devin seems to have made a conscious effort to work with a bunch of "new" people.

(Part of me wants Gene Hoglan on every Devin Townsend release, simply because the Townsend/Hoglan tandem made for some groundbreaking music. Plus, Gene's snare sounds better than almost anyone else's. But that's just my set of ears.)

I'm gonna hug some trees now, bye!

I agree with you man, Gene is the best drummer for Devin's work, especially the heavy stuff.

as much as I love gene, I'm very curious to see where Dirk takes this, since he seems to have a more flowing style.

Gene obviously is the apex when it comes to a monolith of percussion beating the shit out of a listener, but since Deconstruction has more of a story to it, I'll be curious to see how well Dirk's style serves the music.

Hint: He's also probably cheaper :P

Dirk is a master at the drumming craft, I have no complaints at all! Sure Gene is good, but to be honest, I think Dirk's got much more groove in his style, which as a drummer myself, I really appreciate. Only time will tell us how his drumming character plays out with the whole Deconstruction vibe. I think it will be fantastic :D RVP, we already know will be awesome, the dude is extremely dynamic with what he can do.

Of what people have said, Dirk seems better for Decon, because it's not all-out double bass and blast beats.
I bought the latest Soilwork album today, the drumming is awesome, but I'm not too into the music. Dev always chooses great people.

Here's to the Atomic Clock coming back soon!

Shit, just realised that Dirk is the drummer for Aborted!
Fuck they're good.

Soilwork, Aborted, at one point Sublime Cadaveric Decomposition (ok, I looked that up on Metal Archives); definitely qualified.
I guess considering Deconstruction is going to be the most brutal entry of DTP, Gene seemed to be the obvious choice of who the drummer would be. That said, with Devin you should always expect something different, and he chooses his team well.

Scarve, mate. Scarve.

Gene seems to be keeping busy with Fear Factory anyway. I'm actually glad it's not Gene, it would immediately degrade the whole thing to an SYL ripoff (at least to the general public). And to be honest, I admit Gene is an amazingly fast and skilled drummer, but I'm not a big fan of his style.

I was quite sure The Dev repeated it a thousand times that Gene Hoglan won't play drums on Decon? Am I wrong? :?:

No, you're not. Not only did he repeat it, he explained it a thousand times as well.

And Gene himself said he wouldn't play on it when I asked him in February.

I'm happy Devy didn't choose Gene for Decon or any other of solo works and I completely agree with his reasoning for not going with him. In my opinion, he hasn't disappointed with ANY of his solo works. That said, whatever choice he makes, in terms of musicians, always gets me excited to hear how it will turn out. The only time I would REALLY, REALLY get excited to hear Gene work with Devin again, and I'm sure you all would agree, is once and IF they reunite to bring back the epicness that is Strapping Young Lad :chain: Until then, Devin, bring on the art!
