I like Hendrix because he played his guts out for the audience. Sure, a lot of his stuff was just a wank-fest, but he played with genuine emotion and passion. That's one of the reasons why I love Devin's music; there is genuine emotional content that resonates beyond the initial listening. Compare that to most of the homogenized bullshit being forced down our throats in all artistic outlets... music, film, literature, etc...

I wouldn't call Jeff Beck an innovator (Well, maybe I would). He just did blues rock better than everyone else did it back then. Always knew that extra note to put in or take out. Really feels the guitar like it's an extension of him.

There's this dude named Michal Wojtas, plays under the moniker Amarok. He's worked with Maruisz Duda from Riverside before. His biggest influences are Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, and Mike Oldfield, and it shines through in his music, which pretty much sounds like a combination of Mike Oldfield, David Gilmour, and Jeff Beck. http://www.myspace.com/amarokpl

But for those of you not into blues, the best way to go is to work yourself backwards (Or just listen to Buddy Guy).

On another note, I'd trade Santana's life to get Hendrix back any day. No disrespect to the man (knows how to use Dorian like a motherfucker), but the last two albums were horrible.

Page innovated, Van Halen innovated, Hendrix Innovated, Frampton Innovated.

But they all took inspiration from people before them, like jazz guitarists such as Django.

Then you have today's players like Fredrik Thordendal who has also innovated, yet his playing ability soars above those of the players of the past. He doesnt get the recognition they got because his style is too "extreme" or "out there".

There will never be a "best guitarist" because there is a plethora of undiscovered players out there who do incredible things with their instruments (ie: Adam Fulara, Justin King, Bob Zabek; all of which make the players of the past look like beginners by the way)

The "argument" needs to stop now because if it doesnt we will get nothing but: Hendrix this, Van Halen that, Page this, Claypool that.

We all understand the old greats are just that, great. But in terms of playing ability they dont hold a candle to today's best players (and I'm not talking Cooley, Vai, or Petrucci. I'm talking people who can play and write a song)

Totally agree, there's no best guitarist/musician, because it's just all about taste. And taste again connected to mood. So sometime I enjoy even Pat Metheny, or E.S.T., but the next day it's someone else. Discussion like on youtobe (f*** you, Petrucci owns Gilbert big time) are so annoying. No guitarist out there plays for being the best, they play and write to express their feelings. If you're a lucky guy and feel connected to that, that's great, 'cause he will be "the best" for you.
Just remember what Frank Zappa said: Music is THE BEST. (he also said "There is no hell. There is only France." but what the fuck )

All this bit about those old rock guitarists couldn't match the new gods technically is a load of rot.

The innovators were at the cutting edge of technique for their time, and then pushed beyond it. Those that came after learned the results of their work and built on that.

To say the latest generation is the best because they can do more than their predecessors is like saying I am a better mathematician than Archimedes or Galileo because I understand their shit and relativity as well. (actually none of that last bit is true but YKWIM).
