I was just reading an interview with Johnny Kelly from Type O Negative/Seventh Void/Danzig and he gave Gene some serious kudos in there! He was asked about some of the drummers out there that he admires these days, and this is what he had to say:
"There are some younger guys that I dig a lot: Morgan Rose is a good drummer, Roy Mayorga is a monster. That guy is out of control. He is fucking awesome. Gene Hoglan. He’s in a class by himself. I feel so embarrassed to hang out with him [laughs]. The last thing I want to discuss is playing drums with that guy."
You don't often hear people give kudos to others just because they deserve it, so I though that was really cool. There's obviously no point comparing them as they are completely different drummers playing very different music, but I was really happy to read that.
