The Luddites were a social movement of English textile artisans in the early nineteenth century who protested — often by destroying textile machines — against the changes produced by the Industrial Revolution, which they felt threatened their livelihood.

This English historical movement has to be seen in its context of the harsh economic climate due to the Napoleonic Wars; but since then, the term Luddite has been used to describe anyone opposed to technological progress and technological change. For the modern movement of opposition to technology, see neo-luddism.

The Luddite movement, which began in 1811, was named after a mythical leader, Ned Ludd. For a short time the movement was so strong that it clashed in battles with the British Army. Measures taken by the government included a mass trial at York in 1813 that resulted in many death penalties and transportations (deportation to a penal colony).

Their principal objection was to the introduction of new wide-framed looms that could be operated by cheap, relatively unskilled labour, resulting in the loss of jobs for many textile workers.

yo DEV: do what you want man, do what you want. and a big fat THANK YOU.

p.s.: ziltoid looks a lot more like you than i thought. funny how artists always tend to picture themselves when making up a character :)
p.p.s.: the font of the album title is priceless!

Luddite just means somebody against technology or new major technological advances. Anyway..

Dev, I'm just a random fan but like everybody else around here I love the music you make. That said, I respect you as being another living creature and not just some.. music making machine that exists for our enjoyment. You should be making music for you, as part of your creative output, and not for us. Your physical or mental wellbeing should not be the cost of a record or song or idea. Do it for you, not for everybody around you. Keep having fun doing what you're doing and say fuck off to anybody that wants to bitch about it.

I'd so like to talk to Devin. :( Here, every act of addressing him personally comes out as kissing butt or patronising. Don't flame me, I know that it is absolutely not meant that way, but it inevitably comes out that way. Maybe just for my fucked up view of things. :?

Jeez, what's wrong with me? The cover looks so damn awesome! Ziltoid's face is perfect! He has that smart/dum look on his face, like "so you spell W like double U? *in the pose from the cover* Now that's just stupid!"

I didn't want to make a big deal out of it...(everybody else seems to...) Jeezzz... first everybody wants syl to rule the world, and now this. I'm condemned to write what I write, and I REALLY wish people around me wouldn't get into such a flap about it. (we could be huge!!! we could sell a million records! We could get a 5 million dollar deal for a movie!!! action figures!...uhh sure...) Should I just make music for my close buddies? who knows...if producing pays the bills, then maybe.

I have a ton of projects in the works. This is just the latest thing. I will be onto my next project soon...It's something like Eko with a girl singing.

It sucks that I can't access any forum topics other than Ziltoid currently...I won't be posting here for a long while now, so I hope you understand.

I just want to be creative, but people tend to make a big deal out of stuff I do. I can't even fart without 50 people getting upset and Blabbermouth posting it. Everybody involved wants to make Z the biggest thing ever, and really...I just want to fuck around with puppets, make a metal record, and sing about alien shit, maybe sell a coffee mug or two.

I've had a tremendously shitty day, but HELL YEAH TO TRAVIS! He's been a great friend and confidant for years, and we have talked about this concept for ages now...I'm proud he's my buddy.

Ziltoid is a great album...fun, creative and heavy.

This is the last post you'll see from me for a long while...I enjoy being with you and I love making music for the few that want to listen...I have much music coming in the future. Regardless of what you see or hear. This is my final post until I've figured some things out.

dev

PS: This has nothing to do with you guys, your support means the world to me, and I love trying to make you happy...Thanks for the interest in Z, and I'm pretty sure some of you will love the record...it's pretty damn cool...the internet is a toxic place, and other than protools (which I adore...) I'm one more step closer to being a luddite today than ever.

*hug*

Seems like the industry is trying to squeeze a profit out of Devin's poohole—again. Hopefully someone doesn't take Ziltoid and exploit it all in the name of said poohole cashola.

That was a depressing post from Devin. But, you know, it makes him all the more real. He may regret posting it, but I'm sure it helped him in some small way by doing so.

Keep it together, bro! Can't wait for the new tunes! (EKO with a chick singing? The gay Sarah Mclachlan/Ani Difranco/Tara Maclean/Dead Can Dance fan in me says "Hell yeah!")

possibly, my sister's a psychologist and my dad studied psychoanalysis for years, and they both tend to judge things and infer a bit more than they actually could  :P

anyway, this is a fan board, fans who dig the music. And since it's the internet, any direct comment to the artist that isn't strictly related to what he creates could be misjudged by some people, even the artist himself. Besides, forum posts are a weird thing: it kinda empties words. If i said "damn Dev, hope everything is alright and/or get well soon! And how are Tracy and Reyner doing?", even if i REALLY meant that as a person (and i totally would), it's kind of invasive. And since it's an "invisible" media, you can't really tell the good people from the crazy stalkers. And to me, that's why some people (me, for instance) refrain from any comments that aren't music-related.

but anyway, yeah, i mean it, hope ye feel well soon, Devin!

and now i'll just fuck off :P

[edit] especially cause i just noticed that you might have been joking, in part, with the first part of your post

Woah, at the cover! It looks great. Please don't hate me if I like the album. I have a habit of liking your work.

On the Luddite thing I've been saying that for ages. The whole Internet is a cluster fuck of emotions barely held together by the seems. Why just last night I was being circled by 2 angry people at a bar with one of them being a 40+ year old mother. Why did this happen? Internet drama that's what happened. I didn't know these people and I had never even met them before but somehow they thought I was someone else they hated on the Internet. I told them I wasn't the "Internet guy" but they were too drunk and dumb to listen to me or common sense. I left the bar after the bartender told me he called the cops on me even though I did nothing wrong at all.

In short the Internet is a pure media form created by 1's and 0's. It's the people that bring the stupidity to it. Don't let the stupidity suck you down. You can't avoid it and some times you find yourself surrounded by it with an angry look it in it's eye. But we're better than that and can rationalize the truth for ourselves. I'm just one man and you take what you want from my story. Just realize you aren't alone in having to deal with crazy bullshit caused by the Internet everyday.

Oh yeah I almost forgot all hail Ziltoid. The only cool thing the Internet has brought me recently. Keep up the good work and do whatever the hell you want.

Well, that's because sending "personal messages" to someone you don't really know, via a public messageboard is kissing butt. :P Mostly, anyways. But I get your point.

Music is an emotional medium, and with that comes emotional discussions. Kissing butt or patronizing - f**k that! As long as you yourself know that you're sincere, and as long as you yourself feel that it's ok to be misinterpreted as an asskisser or whatever.

Myself, I don't feel that good aboot it. So I tend to focus on the negative aspects of (in this case) Dev's music instead, and come out as a whiney bastard who's never content with anything.

But at least that makes me feel good... 8)

Whatever. Constantly being misinterpreted and knowing that Dev reads (and posts in) this forum are the two main reasons why I post like 3-4 posts per year (nowadays). I don't like acting and feeling like a buttkisser.

With that out of the way, here's what I wanted to say:

The Ziltoid album sounds like fun and I'm looking forward to hearing it.

All the best to all of you,

-Janne
