I wanted to like the movie, but it didn't emotionally grab me, and it felt a little forced sometimes. That, and Gary Busey's kid's smile haunts my nightmares.

Stars talk back, send plans for spaceship.
Girl gets world to build it.
Goes into space.

...you'll have to watch it to find out the rest; I don't want to spoil it.

I really enjoyed the book.

The film...not quite so. It was "Hollywood".

It didn't translate well into film at all. The book's very good, but the film lacks depth and ends badly.
