If you want to get your mind a chill, you don't listen to Meshuggah. You listen to something calm and mellow :P

I actually thought Catch 33 was very different from "I", almost the opposite of it. It's slow/midpaced most of the time and has alot of groove-laden single string playing in weird time signatures, instead of the fast, frantic, incredibly tight chaos of "I". I actually can't get into Catch 33 that much, but I'm assuming it'll grow on me, like most of their albums.

i was mentioning Greg's song on HDAS :D

but when i'm REALLY REALLY pissed off, the only thing that calms down is a session of Meshuggah, or SYL or shit like that

Yeah Catch 33 is the best.

Meshuggah have always had the most artistic concepts of all the metal bands but they never executed it in one big complete concept until C33. That shit is like Edgard Varese or Igor Stravinsky; it's complete freedom from harmonic and rhythmic constraint.

Devin has the extreme emotion in his music while Meshuggah explore the other side; they explore the unity, the oneness, the void, the totality of being where there is all emotion and no emotion. Devin touched on that in Infinity, which is why I hold that in the highest regard of all of his records. Anyone who can put that shit on record is a genius. Meshuggah put their genious in neon lights with C33.

I like the original Nothing more. The new one is more clear and warmer (reminds me of C33) but the production on the original had so much more character, it's kinda unique. Case in point, listen to the start of Straws Pulled At Random. In the original it sounded like pieces of steel screeching against each other, now it just sounds like the guitars and drums heard on most metal records... which I guess is what it should sound like, but the imperfect prodution on the original made it into something else. Or something like that.

Either way both versions rock, I just like the way it used to be more.

And I agree with Greg's summation of Meshuggah, they have perfectly captured the sound of infinity. Anyone else ever listened to Meshuggah half asleep? Talk about disorientating, everything and nothing at the same time.

I hated the sound and production on the original "Nothing" release. I always felt the need to clean my ears off all the dust after listening to it. The production was so goddamn annoyingly clinical, dry and sterile. The drums sounded flat and the guitars weren't clangorous, but scratchy.

I like my productions warm. And with reverb. I like the new "Nothing" version better than the old one. It's still one of Meshuggah's not as perfect albums, though. Give me "None" and "Chaosphere" instead, any day of the week. And the second half of "Catch 33" is not that bad either.

"Destroy Erase Improve" and "I" are their best IMO. And Thordendal's "Sol Niger Within". Now that's some fucked up music. Out of tune church organs rule!

For me the only Meshuggah releases I listen to with any regular-ness are I and Catch 33... maybe this remaster will change that :P. I think what I like about them is that they manage to make extremely powerful music despite sounding totally inhuman and emotionless. Also I really like Catch 33 because I don't even really associate it with a metal release, more of a post-rock or industrial feel to it.

I quite like re-Nothing, apart from Straws pulled at random. That is by far my favourite song on the Nothing CD, but with the re-recorded guitars it just doesnt sound as good anymore :(
Apart from that, the other songs sound better imo

I liked the old drum sound better...the new Nothing and Catch 33 sound a bit too similar soundwise now, IMO

I like the old guitars. The new guitars sound exactly like Catch 33, whereas I still kinda prefer the old ones because they were very boomy and unique.

I like that there's slightly more bass presence.

I kinda like that the vocals are down a little bit.

HOWEVER...the drums. Does anybody else think that lowering the cymbal level was a BAD idea??? Listen to the original Rational Gaze and the new one and listen to that CHINA! Cmon, that thing was part of what made that song so damn heavy. I think the drums are my main disappointment with the reissue, I dig the more natural sound of the original.

Basically, they tried to make this album have the production sound of Catch 33, and I kinda prefer the original.
