The layered, ambient approach is what really grabbed my attention with Devy's music. If there's anything out there similar, i'd love to hear it.

And Enya's albums surpass Devin's. She is the queen of the wall of sound. I mean, five hundred vocal tracks for one song?

What? Is that true?
I have some Enya's songs and they don't sound too thick.

I don't think there is anyone out there that can top Dev's material. 8)

As OTT as Devs stuff....nope but some of the album "Blood Inside" by Ulver has some very layered moments, especially the tracks "Christmas" and "Blinded by Blood"

Mogwai's most recent three or so albums definitely use a wall of sound approach somewhat similar to Devin's. Their music is mostly insturmental and has a "blue" feeling to it. The best album to hear this on is "Happy Songs for Happy People".

Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Meshuggah have some pretty intense layering going on.

oh yeah, I hate to say it but Nine Inch Nails definately deserve a mention for the Downward Spiral

maybe My Bloody Valentine as well, not quite the same kind of layering, more like 5 or so instruments distorted and reverbed a whole bunch, but its a similar thing

Jaga Jazzist's "What We Must" is pretty layered

Type O Negative - October Rust

This may be a bit off, but I know I'm close when I say they used something like 48 to 56 tracks when recording this album, which is FAR more than they've used on any other. I've listened to this album so many times that I know every moment by heart and have actually worn grooves in the plastic, but I STILL catch new things going on in the background to this day. One of the greatest and most misunderstood bands of all time.

"But dude, aren't they goth?"
"They just sing about vampires and stupid shit like that."
"They hate women."
"I heard the singer eats cats."

It never fails to amaze me how many stupid people there are in the world.

october rust is a great album. i wouldnt expect that album to be as layered as the others were discussing though and i highly doubt theyd layer it 57 times. could you imagine what peters bass would sound like? :?
