I was just thinking and, aside from Ulver's Blood Inside, I do not think I've ever heard any albums that are more layered than Devin's Terria.

Two other albums that are notable mentions, I think:

Dredg - El Cielo
VAST - Visual Audio Sensory Theatre

The Dredg one is like a browner, dustier and distant cousin of Terria. At least that is how I always imagine it! Even when nobody else agrees, ha.

The VAST one has some great little details and samples. Cool stuff.

I'd say Devin is still probably the reigning king of the 'wall of sound' technique described here, even if there are some others that use it. I use it myself, it's quite satisfying to layer and layer and layer until you get this all-encompassing wall of sound to just smack people with.

Dredg, Radiohead (OK Computer and forward), Tool (Lateralus + 10,000 Days), The Mars Volta (definitely Amputechture), (later) Neurosis...

Listen to Pink Floyd. In my opinion Devins greatest inspiration for 'Terria'.

Devin's Infinity surely tops Terria.

And Enya's albums surpass Devin's. She is the queen of the wall of sound. I mean, five hundred vocal tracks for one song? And all of them different? No wonder she takes years to make a record. Come on...

PS: What are the other VAST albums like? I only have the first.

"Music For People" is quite a bit like the first one, but it rocks out a little more. Also, the songs are like singles than the songs on VAST, which tended to sound like a collectve, to my ears.

"Turquoise" and "Crimson" were released on Jon Crosby's website for the fans, and the favorite songs from each were released on the album "Nude", all of which were a cross between the 1st and 2nd album. At any rate, if you liked the first album, you are going to like any other.

My favorite song on the first album is "Touched", and I am happy to say that Jon Crosby consistently makes songs this good on every album.

As for layering: Queensryche's "Operation:MIndcrime" was good and Pink Floyd were the kings until Dev came around.
