That is actually one of my favourite quotes of all time... :)

YES! Such an amazing and haunting voice, What's he building is such a freaky song!

I like his live album, Nighthawks at the diner a hell of a lot, live jazzyness kicks ass.

Oh man, am I ever glad this thread has been brought back. I'm actually, right now, a big fan of Foreign Affairs, its a newer one to me, and I love it.

My GRANDMOTHER is a big Tom Waits fan, believe it or not. The man has the 'coolest' voice I've heard... like he's been mixing his scotch with gravel and smoking barbed wire for the past thirty years. Hang on, he probably HAS.

Rain Dogs is my favorite! He's got a lot of great shit, as does Nick Cave who I would think was heavily inspired by him

I actually thought of starting a Tom Waits thread a few months back but never got round to it - nice one HevyMinik!

HUGE Tom Waits fan here - love his style (in a purely hetero way of course ;)), his voice, the humour, and the songs are amazing. He's one of those artists where you always rush out to buy their new album, put it on, think 'But it's just the same stuff he always does... But different.... And still good!' and before you know it, the CD's been stuck in your player for a week.

If I had to pick a favourite... Actually, I don't know if I can, as every album has at least three or four stunning tracks. I do know one thing though: anyone who hears 'Time' (off 'Rain Dogs') and doesn't at the very least get wistful has no soul.

Here's some YouTube Waits-flavoured goodness for you all:

TV interview from his 70s gutter-rat heyday. Apparently this was scripted, but it's still utterly hilarious. "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy..." 'The Piano Has Been Drinking' is an amazing song too, very well performed here.

Here are a couple of videos as well - 'I Don't Wanna Grow Up' and 'God's Away On Business', both awesome

He's actually playing in Chicago before too long, but I won't have enough dough to go see him. My sister will be there though, but I really wish I could see it.

Anyway, I've been listening to Mule Variations a lot the last few days, and I gotta say that it is much better than I had initially thought it was. I always liked it, but I wasn't overly impressed with it when I first got it, but now I'm really beginning to like many of the songs on it.
