Is it just me or does it sound like there's some Chimaira sounding stuff in there?

I've not heard this yet, but...
...I think St. Anger was a pretty good album. Had they halved pretty much all of the songs it would've been awesome. I also respect them for time and again doing whatever the hell they like irrespective of what their closed-minded fanboys want. And what's all this 'James shouldn't sing' stuff? He sings really well on the S&M live album, so much so that I think there are some pretty definitive versions of tracks on there.
By the way, he had to start singing properly because he got a vocal node during the recording of the s/t album. Anyway, I for one think that being able to add a bit of dynamic and melody to a vocal gives it the potential to be much more emotionally charged, i.e. more intense, than one where the vocalist stays with the same old boring bark. Sure, it has it's place, but works so much better with a contrast to set it off. It's pretty obvious the DTB back-catalogue backs up that argument.
Just my two cents...and only 'cos all this Metallica bashing really annoys me when it seems like so much of it is for lame reasons like 'they don't sound mean anymore' or 'they don't sound like they used to'. If they did sound exactly the same everyone'd be complaining about it. And I'm pretty sure they'd have died of boredom if they'd churned out another thrash album like MOP.

WHAT THE FUKK!!! WATCH THE SEATLLE SHOW FROM LIVE SHIT: BINGE AND PURGE AND TELL ME JASON WAS NO INTEGRAL PART OF THEIR LIVE SHOWS!!!
AND STOP YELLING AT ME DAMNIT!!!
Jason's stage presence was undeniable for sure. His vox on songs like Seek or Creep like Eyersore mentioned really brought more energy to the song and made it even more awesome live. That's probably the one thing I miss about Jason not being in Metallica anymore. Other than that, his replacement, Mr. Robert Trujillo, is just a badass on the bass! He really makes the guys sound "heavy" again, ya know?

Maybe they came to their senses after Jason's departure, Rob or not. Or do you mean their live sound and allround guitar tone?
Technically Cliff and Robert obviously were/are better bassists than Jason, but as far as Metallica is concerned, it doesn't get heavier than the aforementioned Seattle show I think. On Cliff 'Em All there are a couple of live cuts that match the intensity of this recorded Seattle performance, but it doesn't get heavier than Blackened and One live in 1989 IMO.
Problem is: I can judge Metallica during their best period only by live cuts like these. I was never able to see them live back then, my buddies and I didn't have a driver's license yet back in the late 80ies.
And as a sidenote of the Seattle show: the end of Jason's bass solo that morphs into the middle part of "To Live Is To Die" is some of the best stuff Metallica have ever played live. Grand compositions these guys were able to write back then.
Some metal band really should cover "To Live Is To Die" during a show, Opeth or Nevermore come to mind.
Sorry,
I'd say that talent-wise Robert's the best bassist they've had. I don't know if he fits as well as Cliff did, seeing that he's more of a funky player, but he'll, without a doubt, help the band in some way, like mentioned, he's already given them that heaviness.
I'm not as big on the song as I was at first after several listens, but I still don't not like it. It clearly shows some positive signs for the future for the band, and I can't do anything but be optimistic about that. It brings some focus back on riffing and soloing. Now, like I already mentioned, they just need to get James' voice fixed.

they probably just got other people to write songs that sounded like "good metallica" for them.

yeah i agree. but its probably that james' voice is shot. the mans been raspily singing for 25 plus years. hopefully he can get help from a vocal coach or something. i like the new song. it shows their going back to the old style metallica
can i just ask what on earth is the point of going back to 'old style' metallica? what a complete waste of time.
Yes. And I've been listening to Metallica since 1994. And I'm only 25. And Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning are my favourite Metallica albums. If they started writing MoP all over again now it would bore me stiff, and doubtless them as well.

That's not the point. I want great and SONGRWRITING and COMPOSITIONS and MUSICIANSHIP and PRODUCTION again! I want to see them FORCING themselves again as players and composers. Something they didn't do since 1988.
