Original post:
It's sound. That's about all I can (and want to) describe it as. :)
The idea is to have every sound and instrument hiding behind eachother; nothing stands out, hardly anything comes forward in the mix, it's all just a muddy coctail of sound. Usually this would hardly be desirable, but in this case it's definately what I'm going for.

There are two songs here, both very unfinished (both length-wise and in terms of layering), but they should give you an idea of what I'm trying to get this to sound like. These are alot more 'musical' than most of the ideas I have in mind-- They have an audible beat and some (if very subtle) instrumentation. Lots of the ideas or unfinished songs I have are quite ambient.

Anyway, here are the links:

http://rapidshare.de/files/21080104/Swi ... _.mp3.html
http://rapidshare.de/files/21079974/Swi ... t.mp3.html

Intended to be mildly repetative and droning. No loops, all single samples (except a couple of barely audible noise loops I made myself) strung together using Modplug Tracker. Produced with Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and iZotope Ozone 3.

I still have lots to layer over it; random recordings made whenever I hear something interesting layered in the background, barely audible conversations, etc. At the moment I have about 30-60 layers of samples, and still lots more to go over the mixdowns. I'm basically trying to get these to sound as ambient as possible while still retaining a vague rhythm.

Suggestions and whatnot are welcome. :)

Awesome!!!

Just a shame these samples were so short...I would love to hear more of this. I really enjoy all kinds of music and sounds when they are this densely layered. I really enjoyed this and would be interested to hear how you would approach a longer piece (ie an album).

Please share more if you have any!

Ask and you shall recieve.
This song is called 'Nothing To Stand' -- I can't stand it. (well, that's not true. I couldn't stand it while making it)

I just finished working on it, after far too much random recorded conversations with myself to throw in the background and even more obsessive tweaking of volume. One more's on the way; one I've had finished for awhile now but never got around to mastering. I will edit this post with the link very shortly.

Heehee, thanks for the reminder...yes, now my system is wired up I can listen in full:

And...wow!!! I turned my amp up to 11 for these, and it was totally hypnotic! These two were much more intense than the others. I could imagine them both on the soundtrack to a very bizarre film. All the details came through so clearly, it was like some kind of surreal narrative.

Your technique for making this stuff is clearly very effective as all 4 tracks have been of really high (releasable?) quality.

I am inspired by all this!

Awesomonga!

Much thanks! :)
I'm glad everything came through clearly; while the intent is to have everything hiding behind eachother and produce a fairly muddy effect, things should be discernable. Hypnotic is also a compliment regarding these... I suppose I could say they're meant to be very boring and very interesting at the same time, if that makes an ounce of sense. Sort of very repetative music but with lots going on to discover each time.

And yes, I've been trying to get a consistent quality with all of them... I'd actually like to make this into a full-length. I have plenty of other unfinished pieces in the works. Just not sure if anyone'd buy it...

I'd buy it! I'd buy two, one for me and one for my mum.

I need to mess around with my brothers keyboard a bit more I think.

No you can not add me 'so we can sex talk'. If you want sex talk, pick up the phone and find your credit card details.

Did you listen to the Swimfail songs? If not, dont reply until you have.

And if you want to add me to MSN you can just do it. I dont think I can stop you!

(Am I too harsh on the lad? I dont think so!)
