I managed to hear SYL through my older brothers, but I discovered Devin's solo side myself. I think I found his 'solo' album Ocean Machine on the internet, and downloaded on song: Life.

I played that song on repeat for about a week.

And here I am! I think I have spent more money on his music than on food. Woops.

Physicist. Needless to say i was not a fan at first listen. It took "earth day" to click after three or four times of hearing it before i would eventually explore the rest of Terria to much delight

I have THE strangest story about how I got into the most musical man I know. And thats through Punky Bruster

I had heard of SYL, but I thought they'd be more of a parody glam band. I was a little right with the parody bit, but who could blame me!? Strapping Young Lad! Dosn't sound like raped in the face metal name untill you hear them. So one day my friend says "I got this really funny album called Punky Bruster". I said "Play that stupid piece of shit". I heard it, and became- HOOKED!!! I loved it SO much. Then one day I thought "This Devin Townsend has some good vocals in him. I'm going to investigate this "strapping Young Lad" I hear of. Well the words I saw were melodic/industrial/speed/death metal, also greeted by a pic of that band looking all mean and nasty! I thought FUCK! This is my kind of band! I heard the mp3 of Detox and Shitstorm, AND DROVE MY ASS to get Alien and City. After the strapping phase came Ocean Machine, Infinity, Terria, and the rest is history :)

AE

DEPTH CHARGE!!!

I knew nothing about Devin's music. I just went out and bought AE on a whim b/c a lot of people on message boards I visit were always talking about how awesome his music was.

Put that shit in on the way home from Best Buy and was never the same. I was like HOLY SHIT.

It was like music that I wanted to hear for a very long time, but I didnt think anybody was making it. What a great fucking CD that is... now I own every Devy album and every Strapping....

I used to be into Dream theater, Symphony X, etc (I still am, just not as much so), and asked around another message board for more prog metal. DTB was recommended, so i downloaded a song or two. Earth Day, and i think one other. I got Terria as a christmas gift from my sister two years ago, and then got Ocean Machine. AE came next. Physicist and Infinity I got online at the same time. I also got a friend of mine to buy the Terria SE (korena version) from Ebay for me, just so I could have the extra CD. Synchestra came in the mail last week.

It also helped being a SYL fan, too. I thought it was really neat that the same guy could make such a varying spectra of music.

My first taste of DTB was when I downloaded an MP3 of the song "Earth Day" back when Terria was first released. I had never heard anything like that before and it definitely took me by surprise since I was somewhat familiar with his Strapping Young Lad work, and that's what I was expecting. Shortly after I ran out and bought Terria and Ocean Machine.

Your not me!

I seriously heard of Devin Townsend the exact way you did, I bought AE from best buy.

This is why downloading is a good thing for bands. Not popular bands, but bands like Devin Townsend. It makes the music so accessible and makes more fans.

i always seek out new music
and in my quest for metal, i stumbled upon Strapping young lad, a band from my own country, wich i had vaguely heard of before
upon further investigation, i was told SYL wasnt that good, so i put that one on the backburner
but the name kept popping up, so i checked em out over at metal-archives.com, and saw that devin had another band, and they we're described as ambient/industrial/porgressive metal
ouh what an interesting mix that sounded like
so off to the internet to download a few songs and see if it fit my taste
and it sure did

funny thing about it, is i still havent heard much SYL, except for detox, and 2 songs off an alien sampler
im keeping that discovery for a rainy day

I think I heard Canada on the HDR site, if recollection serves. It blew me away.

I had previously bought Alien in a clearance sale for £4 ($8 CAD) and loved it, and so I was prepared for the majesty of Dev's solo stuff.
