Unless he's referring to John Kalodner? His beard is up there with the best.

Let's all cross our fingers here, folks... If there's any producer in the world who can pull Metallica's collective heads out of their collective arses (Apart from Dev, natch!), it's Rubin. His record speaks for itself.

Mind you, if they fuck it up AGAIN it's all over, artistically.

Pfffft, you are US-american, aren't you? Sorry, but that's an ignorant and US-centric opinion, the sort of opinion I read on Blabbermouth on a daily basis. IMO. What about Sabbath, Priest, Maiden? Consider the path dependency in the deveploment of (heavy) music while arguing "most influential" topics..

I got into Metallica in 1986 and admired them up to and including (parts of ) the black album. When they released ...And Justice For All in 1988 they were primus inter pares of the "big four" US-american metal bands. Not more not less. Then they changed their producer and corporate media blew the status of "'tallica" out of proportion. What if Maiden were a US-american band and "'tallica" a band from the UK? Maiden would be numero uno in today's metal world, for sure.

To say they are THE most influential metal band is, I agree, incorrect. However not giving them credit where it is due for being ONE OF the most influential bands OF THEIR TIME well, that would be just plain silly. You have given them proper credit so kudo's to you! 8) Yet, to imply that anything post Black Album isn't influential is again incorrect.

Just because their core fanbase (myself included) were unsure of them upon the release of Black Album and dropped 'em like a bag o' bricks upon the release of Load doesn't mean that those albums aren't influential in their own right. Sure they lost face with the hardcore fans but look at the whole flood of new fans they gained with it! If I remember correctly when they released Load Metallica's popluarity was at its peak. If that isn't influential I don't know what is!!!

Now, to dismiss someones opinion based on your assumption that they are from a particular part of the world (that you obviously don't agree with) and then to go on to associate them with the filth that is Blabbermouth is just plain rude!

You should be ashamed of yourself!!

Right.

Yet, to imply that anything post Black Album isn't influential is again incorrect.

Influential in which way? Artistically? Lars Ulrich stated in numerous interviews during the Load-era that they (or at least he) were heavily influenced by flavour of the moment bands like Oasis. Metallica defined a whole (sub-) genre in the 80ies, called speed- or thrash-metal. During the 90ies they sold shitloads of albums more than in the 80ies. But does being big equal being influential? Are lowest common denominator bands like Disturbed as artistically influencial as Voivod, a band which paved the way for a lot of current metal/jazz influenced heavy bands?

Just because their core fanbase (myself included) were unsure of them upon the release of Black Album and dropped 'em like a bag o' bricks upon the release of Load doesn't mean that those albums aren't influential in their own right. Sure they lost face with the hardcore fans but look at the whole flood of new fans they gained with it! If I remember correctly when they released Load Metallica's popluarity was at its peak. Again, huge mass media exposure doesn't equal being artistically relevant or influential IMO. Frank Zappa was never as "big" as other performers of his era.

Now, to dismiss someones opinion based on your assumption that they are from a particular part of the world (that you obviously don't agree with) and then to go on to associate them with the filth that is Blabbermouth is just plain rude!

I occasionally post on Blabbermouth and so do a lot of other smarter people. :)
And I did not "dismiss" his opinion, I just see things from a totally different angle and I don't accept any pretension to absoluteness like "if you don't agree - you are wrong". My opinion still stands: were a band like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest or Iron Maiden from the US, they'd be considered to be the most influential metal band. And they'd be bigger than "'tallica" right now, I'm quite sure. The USA are the biggest market for heavy music, but does that automatically mean that success on the US market equals the "sovereignty over the airspace" as to define what is most influential and what is not, artistically?

And don't forget: Metallica were heavily influenced by NWOBHM - path dependency. Who influenced who and who is the most influencial then?

You should be ashamed of yourself!!

Nope. No shame. :D
