This is either going to be very good or very bad news for me. Either it means that their next album will actually turn out alright, or it means that I'll waste the money on it and it'll be another shitty one. I'm hoping the first one is true.

Well, Rick Rubin hasn't done a bad job in the past. He's kind of known for reinvigorating the careers of bands he's worked with, eg Chili Peppers. Slipknot were on the verge of breaking up before they worked with Rubin.

I think they were trying for a stripped down, back to basics kind of sound on St Anger - kind of like what Rick Rubin does naturally anyway. Bob Rock obviously went too far with the "garage band" theory, and couldn't get that patented Rick Rubin sound, so it figures that they would go straight to the source for the next one. Especially after the backlash they received after St Anger's sound.

Perhaps there were small flashes of brilliance on St Anger, but their objectivity went straight out the window. I mean, come on - you all saw the documentary. They were floundering in a sea of uncertainty, personal anguish and confusion. Now I'm not saying that conflict and emotional turmoil doesn't produce good music or good art - cause it obviously does: look at SYL's City as a perfect example of how a truly pissed off individual can cohesively and coherently channel his creativity into creating brilliant art.

What Metallica were going through was NOT conducive to creating anything near what they should be capable of. Stretching the length of songs out merely by copying & pasting whole sections in ProTools is just plain lazy. That's not innovation, or "returning to their roots", or giving the fans what they want; it's just cutting corners. Watching the documentary, it didn't seem like they had any real ideas as far as songwriting goes - it was just a free-for-all, with nobody really knowing what their jobs were any more. They were out of patience, out of ideas and out of their depth. Having a "no solos" rule shows just how out of touch they really are with both their fan base and their musical peers, who have fast overtaken them in terms of both style and substance. Look how Joey Jordison from Slipknot outperformed Lars Ulrich when he took over for half a show - from all the reports I've read, Metallica had never sounded better. In a perfect world, Metallica should sound more like Mastodon than the piece-of-shit out-of-ideas garage band they sounded like on St Anger.

BUT: I'll certainly be interested to hear whatever Metallica come up with next. Hopefully Rob Trujillo will integrate better into the band's sound. Also, Lars is really going to have to up his game rather than provide simplistic retreads of old drumbeats, cause on St Anger he sounded like a retarded wind-up monkey playing an empty coffee tin. Maybe as their producer, Rick Rubin can be a filter for some of their more stupid ideas and turn them once again into an unstoppable cohesive unit. Perhaps he can even peform some kind of miracle and turn pigshit into chocolate.

But even if he does, that's no guarantee I'll buy the next album. After St Anger, they'll have to do something pretty damn impressive to get back in my good books. Having said that, they're only human, and should be afforded the chance to recover from the mistakes of their past.

Im A Strapping Young Lad wrote: Or better yet, try and not make an album based on what the public would think..just make something that they would enjoy playing instead of this bogus crap, as they said it "going back to our roots, making a garage band sound". Cleary this isn't what Metallica wanted, it's just a shamble reason to get back into the good books of those hard core Metallica fans that didn't like Load and Re-Load.

If they where trying to do that they would of made an album like the recent Megadeth album. I liked St. anger from the standpoint that it was different than what they usually sound like. The drums should of been re-done. Even Lars has said that he wishes now that they recorded them differently.

I personally like it when they use an old lyric in a new song, because it's usually done in a momorializing way. It's done to make you think of that song, at least that's what it does for me.

I just hope they go in and do what they want to do. Load and re-load, while not being as 'metal' are great albums.

I think it's funny how people in here are talking about how they aren't metal anymore. Think of what board you're posting on! This is DTB, not SYL. I call DTB prog. metal/rock, but he has songs like let it roll. Just because a band plays some mellow songs doesn't mean they're anyless metal. It just means they have an extreme range of musical prowess.

It would be cool to see Devin produce Metallica but from the looks of things I think his head is geared on producing my rock n roll heroes of all time.....GWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR! Hell yeah, my favorite musician producing the band that got me into any undergound metal music, can I say it again GWWWWWWAAAAARRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!! this is like super rock group status for me. Hell I think this year for my two favorite bands SYL and GWAR is going to be a very good year. Oh yeah and well as for Metallica, well Kill em All is still their best and for them lately well I have been dissapointed in the direction they have took. But I still respect the fuckers. Just to bad that the true metal scene is finally emerging from the nothing and the leaders are not around to bask in what they helped to create.

Hey lets not forget Metallica is still Metallica despite the directions they have taken. And since Rick Ruben is going to be on the job for the next Met. album I think we all will see a much needed and better change. But, who knows; this album might end up being worst than St. Anger. We'll see whne it hits stores and in my and everyone elses ear.

Impressive....

It's interesting to say the dude who produced Shakira is producing Metallica next. Tho that probably says more about Metallica than the producer...
