As a coach/manager he stinks.

He is a good coach and I disagree with you. The team finished at the top of the group for the world cup qualifications, on the Fifa World Football Rankings they point at # 3. They only conceded three goals in qualifications and Van Basten got involved a lot of young players, that's not a bad thing, that's cleverness.

Anyway, I did not feel the subtletly between your hate for 'Van Basten' the trainer and your appreciation for 'Van Basten' the player so that's why I felt confused.

I tend to use the word 'hate' a lot (and I do like to use it in combination with the word 'passion'), maybe that put you off track.

And although the soccer team did pretty well qualifying, I think Van Bastens decisions were highly arguable, given the examples in my previous post. It all just doesn't make sense to me.
You don't need young players for a national team. Good players, that's what it's about. Working up to the future is not an issue. On this level, it's all about experience. Players who can cope with pressure, players who don't make mistakes and can make up for others mistakes. Rookies trying to run past 8 opponents on their own half kill a team, they don' make it.

I think Van Basten shouldn't have been appointed (yet) at all. He has done nothing before our national team. Ajax reserves don't count (and he turned the national team into Ajax reserves anyway). And again, the fact that he was a great player doesn't make him a great coach.
And I don't see him as a clever man either. My impression could be wrong of course, but whenever I see an interview, or a press conferece with the man, he never says something usefull that we didn't all know yet. He refuses to explain his decisions a lot, and seems to be offended by the press as easily as the two last coaches, Van Gaal and Advocaat, were. He has this attitude that says "Go away, I don't want to say anything and I don't want to be critisized. Don't you know who I am?" Generally known as arrogance.

Totti broke his ankle, is he going to be alright for the Word Cup?

You'd have to be inhuman to not have a reaction like that to those sort of injuries...though after Cisse's recent antics, I can watch his injury with great amusement, even if it was the most sick thing ever!

No, actually, I won that year. I didn't want to say anything as I'm so modest, but seeing as you brought it up:

JuZ - Euro 2002 Champion!

Congrats, Juz! That was quite good. More than just good, it was great, considering the fact that you're Australian. Well done!

I hope that England go all the way. We definately have the players but whether we have the coach with the tactical knowledge needed is another thing.

You also need a fair amount of luck on the day. We certainly got a bit with our group.

I also want to see an underdog surprise everyone, like Brazil :-)

I'd just love us to get to the final, that would be so great :)

Realistically, experience tells me that I'm going to be dissapointed though.
