Was just wondering if royalities on satelite radio work the same as they do on terrestrial radio? Also, how do you feel about satellite radio? As it's national radio and not local, it's better for spreading the word (millions of listeners at a time - 5 million on XM, 3 million on Sirius), but as it's popularity increases do you think it means fewer plays (thus fewer royalty payments) on local radio shows?

Devin got me one of those nifty XM units for Christmas and it's been going non-stop ever since. They have just come into Canada so it's really new here.

Astonishingly, Christmas Day we were flipping channels in the car and AAA came on. And I had just said to him a few hours earlier "If I ever hear you on this thing I'm gonna freak"...

I don't know how the royalties work for radio. I have wondered that for a while. We get a list of songs played worldwide from SOCAN every quarter and it's always a strange and interesting document but God knows how it's accumulated. I am sure that legally they would have to apply by number of subscribers.

That is a very cool link. Is there one for XM too? Yikes, at some time they played Ants and Red Tomorrow??? Of ALL of the possible songs, those are the ones they choose to play on national radio??? Ugh.

And what about when DTB or SYL play live in Canada? They can get "royalties" from playing, too.
Or maybe you get that already?
Essentially, you get royalties when your songs are being played to the public, be it live, radio, TV or whatever...
At least, it's the way it works here in Denmark. I think it does too in the States with the ASCAP and stuff...? In Canada there is a similar organization?
I'm curious! (Not about how much you make, but about the organizations in Canada and the States )

We are registered for that, I was meaning I don't know how they calculate how much you earn.

It only works if the venue/promoter you are working with pays into an agency, most don't. And unless you have a really big crowd the amount of work involved to register and submit the required information for each live show is not worth any payback.

Update on this topic...

Bands do not earn any royalties from satellite radio. Because they do not have adverising it is not in the same category as commercial radio. Bummer too because XFM has been playing SYL every few hours...

Royalty collection companies are trying to get satellite and internet radio included but have not been successful.

If forced to comply, it might then influence what they play and they wouldn't be as cool. It's still great to get the exposure, whether paid or not. XFM Liquid Metal station is playing Antiproduct, Fucker, You Suck, and Monument regularly. And oddly the punk station is playing AAA.

Here the problem is in the proving the show happened. You need to provide them a ticket, contract, or show poster as proof. You also need to know the attendance for each show. I gave up hounding tour managers for these things. It's not part of their job and finicky if you are doing 45 shows in a row to remember to collect "proof" and attendance on each one.
