Who were drummers from Australia you were thinkin of Dev? Matt 'Skitz Sanders?
YouTube'n drummers with some mates, there's a local teacher by the name David Jones, real professional drummer could be good for more experimental stuff, dunno how hard it's be to book him though.

for a short time I got used to the thought of Devin having an Austrian drummer on his project :D

well my recommandation above all others would have definitley been Yanic Bercier (ex-Quo Vadis)... very very seldom seen anyone THAT tight, impressive and exact before - without lacking the right feeling or sense to the stuff he plays at all.

but I'm nevertheless curious like hell who is gonna make it, especially if he's not from the metal-scene.. now that's what I call a surprising and unexpected choice.

It would be pretty cool, he does have a jazz background. Or how about Chris Pennie (Dillinger Escape Plan, Coheed & Cambria)?

Virgil has already been mentioned, so, no.

I would hope it's this guy :

Julian Percy.

Devin talked about how you can read a drummer by the way he hits the snare. I think this is a good example. And I don't think he's been mentioned, nor made any metal music. He HAS pretty tight feet though. Maybe it could turn out good.

It's a shame in a way that Devin chose someone who hasn't been mentioned yet because there were some very interesting ideas IMO. But I believe Devin has made the right choice, whoever he chose.

SYL was an amazing band, I love the guys, I'm proud of what we did, and I will be talking about it and answering the same questions for the rest of my career, ultimately...I guess that will decide how long the career lasts. I'm still on the fence as to weather the music world will welcome me as anything but that character...it was a great charcter. And if it doesn't, I'm cool with that as well.

So to the syl fans, I love you, I love syl, deconstruction is for you....(and me).

To Dev:

I am glad SYL is overwith, and I am not afraid to say it. Bring on the hate!! Your music is already so much better without having to worry about making certain people happy. It has so much more of a free and open vibe. I personally love SYL...gotta be my fave BAND of all time, but I always thought it tainted what potential you possibly could have with your solo music.

I feel this everyday. Around my town I inherited a certain reputation for playing fast...and always really heavy. I have many grindcore and death metal roots, and I embrace them. But damn....now I just wanna do what I really always wanted to do, and that is write incredibly melodic, complex and emotional music. I don't feel anyone ever wanted to hear that from me...or wouldn't take me seriously, until now. When I got rid of the drugs and that lifestyle, I put my foot down and said "this is me, take it or leave it"....and surprisingly people have taken to it really well. I see these parallels in our lives Devin...and it helps me everyday to know that you go through the same shit.

Please, I don't want anyone to think I even compare to you, or that I think I do....but we are in similar situations nonetheless.

Thanx for the memories,

Dan
RIP SYL

My favorite drummer honestly would have to be Joey Jordison. Him or the drummer of Meshuggah. I don't think any other drummer in the world can do that beat from Bleed.

Wow, no one mentioned John Longstreth from Origin.....great snare attack...not to mention how many bpms he can play...not very flavorful though.

in terms of metal men:

Stef Broks of Textures
Peter Wildoer of Darkane
Tomas Haake of Meshuggah
Dan Foord of Sikth

Stef Broks and Dan Foord are two awesome young monster drummers.

I'm really interested in who Devin is thinking of.

The one's I named were metal drummers on purpose, but I really believe that it's a cool idea to have an amazing "non-metal" drummer give his best shot at it. It could result to something special.

i have been acoiding this discussion from the start for two reasons.

1. My friend (who has drummed for about 15 years) and i always discuss our favourite drummers and Gene is always my top pick.

2. I believe Devin will make a great choice on his own. Maybe these recommendations will put him in the right direction but i wouldn't be surprised if he picked someone not mentioned in this thread.

I would also like to see someone who does not have a full metal musical background to drum. It would add a lot of flare and personality. But remember those blast beats!
