This may sound a little odd, but i acually find alot of non-metal music quite heavy also. Like; heavy in a deeply sombre kind of way.

Im a huge fan of Lisa Gerrard and ive got her The Mirror Pool album. Fucking incredible. Some of her tracks is very haunting and deeply destressing. Some of the stuff she did in Dead Can Dance has this heavyness and intensity also.

But when it comes to the heaviest metal: Meshuggah, SYL, Burzum come to mind. Oh and There is this death metal band from Tasmania called Cycoptic ..... or something. If i knew how to spell their name i would of got one of their records by now. dam it

And Tori Amos has some pretty "heavy" songs like In The Springtime of His Voodoo and Professional Widow.

Depends on one's definition of "heavy" I suppose. When I think "heavy" I kind of picture slow, weighty & bludgeoning more than fast riffing & gurgly cookie-monster vocals. For me, heavy music should make you nod your head and get lost in the moment, and make you not give a shit that you're sitting there looking stupid with your eyes closed, nodding your head and snarling "fuck yeah!" under your breath. Here's a few off the top of my head.

Isis - Panopticon : That's probably the first thing that I thought of when I read the title of the thread. Big sound. Music to make you quake in your shoes. Vast and foreboding, like seeing the curve of the earth from space and realising your own insignificance. Now that's heavy.

Scarymother - Tai Laeo : One of the heaviest albums (according to my above criteria) I can think of from when I was growing up. Awesome, criminally underrated Australian band. Still an awesome album even by today's standards.

SYL - goes without saying, especially City.

Praxis - Sacrifist : No vocals at all! Bill Laswell's scariest album. Just makes feel kinda and uncomfortable... and kinda queasy. Undeniably heavy, but old-school kind of psycheldelic brooding heavy. See also: Funkadelic - Maggot Brain.

Converge - Jane Doe
Lamb of God - New American Gospel
Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine
Meshuggah - Chaospehere
Even though the above four albums are vastly different from one another, they all kind of feel like an equal level of heaviness to me. While Converge is more angrypunk-heavy, LOG is more metal-heavy, DEP is more eclecticmetalcore-heavy and Meshuggah are more technical/polyrhythm-heavy, they all have gravel-gargling frontmen, amazingly talented drummers and are not a little scary for the unititiated.

Yes, Lisa Gerrard is quite heavy indeed! So is Diamanda Galàs, in very much the same way. Check out her Defixiones double disk set.. Probably the most emotionally heavy thing I've ever heard.

"Gold Dust", "Strange", "Putting the Damage On", "Playboy Mommy", "Northern Lad", "Toast" and "The Beekeeper" are damn heavy.

I wouldn't list those in my heavy list for Tori songs personally. They are light and ethreal to me...expecially Putting the Damage On, which is my favorite Tori song...that or Little Earthquakes, which I would call heavy, heh

Ill definitely buy The Defixiones album, now that youve mentioned it

Anyway, another amazing group thats worth hearing is Elend. Heard of them?
Amazing stuff. Think Dead Can Dance but much more violent and terrifying. I would recommend any of their albums. Many seem to prefer The Umbersun album.

Theyve got a couple of downloads on their web-site
Here's one of them: http://www.elend-music.org/downloads/Melpomene_high.mp3

I'm actually beginning to think that the Residents may fit in here, just because of the whole atmosphere of their music.

I'm thinking more of the emotional weight of those tunes...

And yeah, "Damage" is a winner... one of the main higlights of the second Sydney show I saw. That one, "Spring Haze" and "Playboy Mommy" owned that show.
