I forgot all about Kyuss, great pick there!

I'll throw in some Orange Goblin and Sasquatch to go with that, and Weedeater for another ultra heavy band.

Leaving aside TSIB, I think Neurosis have been getting heavier as they go on, dynamically speaking.

Plenty of doom bands could be up for 'heaviest band ever'... I probably couldn't decide, it really depends what in particular affects YOU in the wee small hours I guess.

The perchant of speedier bands to shy away from personal lyrics, and the obvious 'technical' nature of such music tends to take away from my own response to it. I enjoy fast metal, but not in the same personal way I take to doom. More in an energetic, fun, blood pumping way I guess.

depends what your definition of heavy is. if you mean heavy as in intense and angry then yea it's probably their least heavy, but if you mean it in the emotional sense of being 'deep' (Neurosis is probably the best example of this ironically) then it is probably their most heavy.

It all depends on what you gleam from it. Nothing has a very tortured sound, but it was hastily put together, even the band says this. They had nearly an entire album written and then they got 8 string guitars and scrapped the whole thing, they were forced to rush to put Nothing out. I dunno, I just find too many fillers in that album.

I don't find there to be any filler material on this album. I do also think it is the heaviest in their catalogue... speed and chaos don't mean heavy to me... The sheer weight of the sound is far heavier than any prior release, and the weight implied by the ultra slow speed of the record again gives it a far heavier feel.

Also, not to ge into a flaming war wit you, but you have some facts wrong. They did not have another album written that they scrapped. They never even recieved those eight string guitars until the second wave of touring for the Nothing album.

Before they started recording, Fredrik had the idea to do an album with all bass and no guitars. He modified that idea to being an album using eight string guitars, which they put in an order for. They knew that there was no way they would recieve the instruments in time to do the album so they strung up their Nevborn prototype seven strings as if they were eights (missing the highest string) and recorded the album with that.

So from the get-go, the album was always done in this tuning. If you want more details/evidence, please see http://www.tandjent/com/meshforum

Fredrik has posted the exact details of what was recorded with what in the guitar section.

Hmm...that's what I had read in their interveiw on Revolver...they had said that they had almost an entire album written before they got the idea of writting an album on 8 string guitars (when they were playing around with bass guitars) and then scrapped it to write this. It's possible we're both write, they started writting this before they got their 8 string guitars, but I'm pretty sure they had material before they started writting the album this way.

Ah well, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, don't care enough to argue. Difference of opinion on the music though

Ed Gein.....the song called "Killing A CoWorker" sounds like a continuous car wreck....it's terrifying and insane all at once.

"Ethereal..." is damn god, groovy shit. Heartwork was at the time a true mindblower for these ears! Still their best imo.

Another band that plays it as slow and heavy as possible, but they have so many other cool elements to their music as well.

Yeah, I love that band. Saw them live last night, and it's so much heavier live.
