MASTER!....... MASTER!
I loved Master of Puppets, it was truly a great album.
I also dont really get the whole "hate Metallica" thing going around since they probably influenced half of the musicians in the bands we love today.

No doubt about it...nearly every band pays homage to them..even if they arent metal :) I love load and re-load...you have to be narrowminded if you don't see and appreciate them for what they are. It would be like saying you love SYL but hate Terria cos it isn't metal!

Not overly fond of Metallica any more, but Master Of Puppets is superb.

2004 called, it wants its thread back.

 Nah, no offense, I just wish Metallica could be forgotten again. I had forgotten them, and then this thread came back up. Oh well...

Why forget about them? I still like some of their stuff. Even Load and Reload have some very good songs, in my honest opinion. My favourite would be RtL or MoP (I like hiding somewhere in the majority, you know)

Would be quite interesting to hear what the next record sounds like. Though it's likely that I have to wait till 2008.

I kinda see Metallica as a "my first metal band" type of thing. For that they're very good (outside of my least favorite album from them, which I won't bring up until later). Anyway, I think that Kill 'Em All is their best album just barely edging out the other of the first five studio albums. I'll go through them one by one with my views on them:

KeA - Fast and aggressive, the most thrashy of all their albums. Also has some of my favorite Metallica lyrics, like the first bit of "Hit the Lights" and the majority of "Whiplash". Just awesome if you wanna go nuts and thrash around.

Ride the Lightning - A little bit actually heavier, "Fight Fire With Fire" is possibly their heaviest song that they've ever done. This one has a lot of the band's hidden gems. Everyone knows the songs like "FFwF" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Call of Ktulu", and even "Trapped Under Ice" and "Fade to Black" and "Creeping Death", but the two big gems on this that fewer fans really know real well are "Escape", which is my favorite song on the album and "Ride the Lightning" which most fans know mostly as the title track and that's about it, but wow, it's a good song.

Master of Puppets - When did the band get so progressive? Well, I guess it's not so progressive, but at this point it was much more progressive than anything else they'd released. A couple of really heavy tracks in "Battery" and "Damage Inc" with a lot of good stuff for the most part in the middle.

...And Justive For All - The band's most epic album, songs like "To Live is to Die" and "...And Justice for All" nearly hit the ten minute point, and outside of "Dyers Eve" there really isn't a song on the album that can be remotely called short. Another really good piece though.

Metallica - Heavier than most of their previous stuff as in lower pitched, but much darker and slower, reinventing the band a little bit. There's some awesome melodies throughout this album as well as interesting lyrics. I don't care for speaking parts though, which is my only beef with "Of Wolf and Man".

Load - A lot softer than their previous stuff, but still more of a dark sound. The first half of this album I tend to enjoy, but the second half for the most part isn't my cup of tea outside of "The Outlaw Torn", which is possibly my favorite song on the album.

ReLoad - At this point this was their worst album. Similar sound to Load, but with what I consider to be even worse songs on it. "Fuel", "Devil's Dance", "Fixxxer", and "Where the Wild Things Are" are all songs that I really enjoy though. There's other stuff that's pretty good, but that's about as far as I can go with them.

St. Anger - I guess I'll just say that this album really isn't anything I can get into. I know what they were going for, but I just don't think they did it very well. "Sweet Amber" is an okay song, and parts of "St. Anger" and "Frantic" are alright, but outside of that I don't really care for this album. It's pretty heavy, but the songwriting is lacking to me.

I'll just do those, since they'd already written the majority of S&M when they put it out and Garage Inc. was all covers.

I find it disgusting that anything after AJFA was included on this poll, worse still, people actually voted for some of them.

'Kill 'Em All' for me.

Actually, I found that after watching "Some Kind Of Monster" I developed a sort of sympathy for these guys.
Musically however, they are still irrelevant to me now. Oh well. That's the way it goes I suppose.

I still gotta say that I never really cared for them. Maybe for the Black Album a little bit at that time but I was never a huge fan. And St. Anger...bought it for 15 Euros, listened to it twice, wanted to hang myself, sold it for probably 5 Euros.

I got the same feeling when I watched Some Kind of Monster. I was just thinking like "..Wow"

Well I voted for St. Anger, so you can now all hate me and start sending me e-mail bombs and stuff.
I never liked Metallica because of Kirk Hammet's solos, but now they're gone.
I like dark downtuned guitars more than the trash / speed metal sound of the older Metallica. And yes, I DO like Lars' 'cooking pan'-snare. I bought St. Anger on vinyl, and the sound is much bigger than on CD. It just sounds great, and you can hear the 'jamming' attitude on this record, instead of the forced static songwriting, a la Dream Theater. I like that too, but not as much as just plugging in a guitar, and start playing some riffs.

Load is on a VERY close second, because I think those songs are really well written, and besides that, I think Load is one of the best produced metal albums ever. The guitar sound especially is superb.

That is almost exactly what I think. Although I would choose RTL if the production was better. Goddamn I love trapped under ice.
