I know there are a few Dream Theater fans on this site, so why not have a thread dedicated to them.

Which of their studio releases do you like the most?

I think I am probably splie between Falling Into Infinity and the second CD from Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence. I know a lot of people don't like these albums, but I love that second CD and the second half of Falling Into Infinity owns.

What do you like/dislike about them?

he he...I think you accidently created the same thread twice. I´m not really a DT fan. I like the last one though. But there is just too much to discover that i sometimes forget to stick with one band.

Edit: OK, I understand why there are two threads now :)

I like the musicianship, cool songs etc

I dislike James La Brie. I can't tell you why, some people are annoyed by his voice, I'm not really, but when I see the man, I am for some reason compelled to go and slap him about the face. He makes me want to scream, lol

I say Scenes from a Memory.... I think it has their best stuff in it, although Six Degrees has some great stuff on it, as far as their "great" goes (Misunderstood, Six Degrees, that last song on disk 1...) Falling into Infinity is good too.

But Dream Theatre, well, I got over them a long time ago when I started to realize how much cheesy shit I listened to. I just got so sick of cheese everywhere; I can't lisen to any cheesy bands anymore, so I haven't listened to DT in God knows how long. In fact, that really kills most metal for me. Heh... oh well.....

I love Meshuggah because they aren't cheesy, they manage to create such emotion and feeling in their music while still having fascinating musicianship... I don't think DT pull that off often. Some songs really got me back in the day (Home for example) and still mean a little to me, but the whole sound they go for really seems contrary to emotion to me. Especially the singing.............................

DT obviously are technical motherfuckers, but they can't seem to marry feeling to it as well as a lot of bands who can't play half as good as them. In fact, I daresay DT have gotten even worse, that last piece of crap they released was an utter dissapointment except for Vacant, the instrumental after it and In the Name of God, which is damn cheesy for a while but has some of their best shit in it.

I can't believe Petrucci has the gall to write "you cannot touch the way I play or tell me what to say".... His solos on that album are so fucking tasteless and stupid that I don't know why he even bothered.... We all know he can play fast, we don't need a solo consisting entirely of tremelo picked notes to prove it to us. What a wanker.

I don't listen to much DT, but I would say Awake. I particularly enjoy Space Dye Vest.

And welcome back Billy! :D

Oh yeah, I think they are a very over-rated band by some, but I can enjoy them very much from time to time (less so now than I used to) and I think they are all very equally matched in terms of ability, something I like about that...again, not sure if that makes sense

Let it be known that cheese is a matter of opinion...unless of course you wrote the bible on this dairy product of sorts...

"you cannot touch the way I play or tell me what to say"

now that can be taken in a number of ways.

"His solos on that album are so fucking tasteless and stupid that I don't know why he even bothered"

"DT have gotten even worse, that last piece of crap they released was an utter dissapointment except for Vacant"

...who has gall?

Thanks Coma :D , School is done, and I can spend time doing this again.

P.S. Any of the Art Institutes are way too pricey for the content.

I'm not a DT fan anymore... I used to, but I "left" them after "Six Degrees...". IMO their last great album is "Metropolis Pt 2: SFAM". After that... Darkness.
Obviously this is my opinion!!

Awake it's my favourite. I love that album. Great songs, great playing and great atmosphere. I think that DT have lost most of their magic when Kevin Moore left.

I'm not a big fan of James La Brie too... I don't like his style.

James is why I don't like Dream Theater. I think quite a few people have this problem too.

He's not too bad when he's in the studio, but I can only listen to them live in very small doses. His voice it awful. Ahving said that, I really liked his singing on The Human Equation - when he uses his soft voice it sounds really good. I think he uses it a lot on the second CD on Six Degrees.
