Incidently, Darwin isn't a mod, though that would be cool. :)

I just have to seriously wonder about people who want to express themselves intelligently yet they feel they need to insult others and their opinions.

Seriously, folks. Don't we all complain about mudslinging in campaigns?

What the hell makes it any different to do it to your friends?

Bush wants to make abortions criminal.

There are parts of the US where sex before marriage is a criminal.

There are laws that make arab looking people suspects in general, arabs are being held up on airports for hours for the official reason of looking suspect.

WITH A HOLY LOT OF OTHER THINGS LIKE THIS I KNOW THAT THE CONSERVATIVES ARE A THREAT TO MANKIND. STOP THE CRIMINALS. VOTE KERRY. FOR A FAIRER WORLD, for fuckin sake.

Woo-wee. And people wonder why I avoid political threads!

Of course taking an IQ test was a joke. It would be nice if people voted because they were informed about issues and knew why they were voting for someone, but an IQ test would be impossible to implement in the first place...but it was a joke.

And I shouldn't have to defend my stance on political correctness. There are too many instances where it has gotten out-of-hand, and I'm not referring to "equal oppotunity" or "civil rights". Those are completely different things.

Talk Radio. Guess it depends on what shows you listen to. Most of the shows I tune in to are from Independant hosts. Yes, I watch Fox News along with the other news programs, but if there was no Fox News, I'd only hear the liberal side. And I think they do a pretty good damned job of being fair, but democrats hate Fox News because it kicks eveyone else's asses in the ratings (aside from network news, which is free and in almost every household) and it shows the other side, the "evil right wing" side.

21st Century Jesus: You stated something I never knew, and I'm always up for more education. :D Where in the US is it criminal to have sex before marriage? This is interesting to me!

You know what I find ironic about all of this? I'm having to defend what little statements I've made in this thread because my point of view differs from some of you...most of you. Yet "liberals" are supposedly free-thinkers and more "accepting" of other people's opinions and beliefs. More "understanding". Is this true? :)

I don't think there are a lot of liberals here either.... more like socialists if you ask me.

There goes our freedom

I know exactly what you're saying, but unfortunately those are the rules. Although I think that insulting someone often gets confused with expressing one's opinion on this board...

Bush wants to make abortions criminal.

There are parts of the US where sex before marriage is a criminal.

Hurrah, glad to see you're on our side on the abortions topic.
I didn't know there were parts in the US where sex before marriage is criminal, but I did know that there are parts where it is legal to have multiple wives, something which I just don't get.

You know what I find ironic about all of this? I'm having to defend what little statements I've made in this thread because my point of view differs from some of you...most of you. Yet "liberals" are supposedly free-thinkers and more "accepting" of other people's opinions and beliefs. More "understanding". Is this true? Smile

BlueRaja, I don't want to attack you or anything, but isn't defending your statements the same as giving arguments on why you think your opinion is the correct one? And isn't this all part of a discussion? This whole thing you're saying about political correctness and the talk radio, it's your opinion, and that's great; it gives us more reason to discuss with you.
I don't know if every liberal is a free-thinker, but I'm guessing most of the people on this forum are, and that's why we accept your opinion, I don't think it's a question of understanding.

I never understood why everything had to be fit into a neat little category.
It irritates the shit out of me. Nothing personal. I just wish that if anyone were going to explain anything at all, they would explain WHY in hell it is so important that people be classified into groups? Why is music classified into tiny little subgroups? I don't even know what the hell I would be classified as nor do I have any desire to break it down to figure it out.
It's just silly, if you ask me... which you didn't, but oh well.
People believe in what they believe. That should be the end of it.
Ok, enough ranting.

Hmmm, yeah never heard about that either. More info please. What I do know is that gay sex has been ilegal in at least Texas (don´t know about other States) untill last year...yes, last year in 2003, not 1953. That was pretty shocking to get to know that. I mean seriously...you were able to get jailed for that? WTF??? I think in one County in the States they even made homosexuality ilegal because they say it´s a crime against nature. Yet, taxes from homosexuals seem to be pretty welcome though...crazy stuff.

No, I don't think every liberal is a free-thinker, but it's one of those broad assumptions made of them, just like all the typical ones I hear made of conservatives.:) And I hope no one thinks I'm being attacked, because I don't feel that way.

Polygamy is illegal, but there are Mormon Fundamentalists who still practice it and wish it was legal. But these Fundametalists are not even recognized by mainstream Mormons. I'm reading a book by Jon Kraukauer (same author who wrote Into Thin Air and Into The Wild) called Under The Banner Of Heaven that kind of covers all of this. It's very interesting.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's horrible having to categorize yourself when someone comes up to you and asks about your music-style, political views, favorite movies. It's been going on for ages. It's probably people's urge to control and know everything.

Oh wow, I didn't even know he had a new book released. I've read Into Thin Air, I thought it was an amazing book. Very gripping, because the whole time I was reading it, I couldn't get it out of my mind that this guy had really been to the top of mt. Everest, and had to go all those awful situations on the way back.

you see, that was never the point. People can believe what they want to but when it affects the lives of all people, it seriously is not OK. Imagine you are in love with someone who happens to be the same sex as you and someone tells you you shouldn´t be allowed to get married because your way of love is a perversion...and let´s say that man is in power and will change the constitution so every door for you to ever be completely equal is closed. See, that´s the point. As long as you´re not part of the minority yourself, you don´t think about it or care about it much but I certainly do because I certainly wouldn´t want anyone to close any doors for me that could change my life negatively like that. Bush certainly is not able to open his mind at all in that case. I´m sorry that I´m stuck on that issue so much but sometimes it is just difficult for me to believe that we´re really living in the 21st century.

Oh and everybody who wants to further explore Roseanne Barr´s Bush, please raise your hand....

It's easier to insult someone when you don't face this person.
People will use internet to exhort their frustrations and it makes them feel stronger because finally there's no risk to pretend to be someone else with people you will never meet.

In real life it is different, usually some pretentious people are more humble when it comes to real explanations

Into Thin Air is sooo great. But I'm an Everest nut. I'll buy anything or watch anything if it covers Mt Everest. If you loved that book then I strongly suggest you read Into The Wild as well. True story about a wealthy kid who left his family behind and decided to hitchhike through the US with no money and little survival training. Some hunters found his body in an old abandoned bus in Alaska on the Stampede Trail. Crazy.
