Actually, toilet seat positioning depends on two factors for me:
1. If it is in some-one else's house - I leave it as I found it.
2. In my own house - it depends upon my sobriety and/or the state of "trouser panic" I'm in at the time.

I once went to use the toilet in a bus station in Sweden. Strangely there were lots of individual cubicals which just opened out to the train station (opposite the cafe actually). I had a bit of trouble with the door but soon got in and sat down to use the toilet. I had just assumed that it had locked automatically and was pretty shocked when someone opened the door, and everyone outside looked in to see me sitting taking a dump.
