I know what you mean but its actually quite frustrating knowing that the albums are finished and ready but we have to wait for a record company to go through the motions before we can hear anything.

I would love it if I could purchase a download almost straight after mastering. :)

Perhaps the record company could set up a deal where the hardcore fans like us can pay extra on their pre order and get to download a high quality rip once its ready. Then we get the physical copy on the actual release date. That way they actually make a little extra money from people who would normally download a leak once its available. I'm not sure, its just frustrating that in a world of instant digital connection we still have record companies operating on business models from 1990.

Phase and I were talking the other night, he asked me if Dev announced an album out the blue, and it was available to buy tomorrow with no promos, reviews or leaks...would I buy it? I said yes. Apparently this is becoming a fairly popular strategy....

I agree though, knowing that it's finished but not in my grubby mitts is frustrating; it's like having to wait for a pie to cool down!

I WANT THAT PIE!

I can't pretend to know the first thing about business strategies, but that doesn't seem like it would help sales. I expect the lack of advertising would do much more harm than good. A surprise release wouldn't fix the downloading problem, and less of the people that would buy the CD regardless would know about it (most importantly, those that haven't heard that artist's stuff before). Unless some media form is created that can't be downloaded and has a clear advantage over CDs, I doubt there will be much of a real solution. There are a lot of people that agree vinyl records (not from a CD rip) are superior to CDs, and the sound of an actual record can't be duplicated digitally (we can download something close to the sound of a CD, but not a vinyl record IMO). The downloading issue seems to have caused the resurgence of vinyl. There is no doubt MP3 is much more convenient on the move, but it sounds terrible in comparison (even compared to the original CD in many cases). For me, the perfect situation would be for the artists to make proper quality vinyls and include a free MP3 download of the album (CDs generally end up getting ripped and shelved nowadays anyway).

I don't think a suprise release is the best strategy. I think they should just go ahead with normal promo and marketing but offer a paid download as a pre release gesture to the hardcore fans. We're the ones who aren't going to buy the album because we see promo, we'll buy it because we love Devin's music. The casual fans won't even be aware of the early download I guess.

I doubt this kind of thing will happen in the near future though. Roll on June.

This last stretch is going to feel the longest...
I'm actually kinda hoping Decon and Ghost don't get a little trailer on Myspace, because I listened the shit outta the Ki and Addicted ones, and when I had the full thing there were tiny snippets of the album I knew by heart mixed in a bunch of new stuff and it was kind of odd.

They should just release a free streaming-version + immidiate download in mp3 quality (low price) + download in lossless quality (medium price) + cd preorder (higher price) NOW - before it leaks. Everybody would be happy except maybe the two print magazines that are still out there.

PS: It has been 2 years and 2 months since the first teaser for Deconstruction has been posted and 8 months since the first teaser for Ghost - i don't need another one... ;-)

Yep. My understanding is that the DVD's from the shows in November will be released to coincide with the boxset.

Preorder confirmed as Monday the 16th of May...

Interesting development (possibly? I certainly haven't heard it before...) - The albums are going to be available in a combination package. Here's the special slipcase for that combo pack:

This is right on, a few bands I listen to do this already... when you pay for the preorder they sent out an mp3 download to you on a certain date just before the actual release date, i think it was a week or so early , I though it was a great gesture. another one sent out a bunch of bonus tunes , mainly songs that didn't make the record just to tease or appease you until the actual release date! I am going to buy Dev's stuff regardless, but I would love a little fan pre-ordering appreciation....
