I can appreciate Ihsahn's talent, but his music just doesn't do anything for me. I'm curious to hear what Devin was able to pull out of him.

Indeed, my first experience with black metal was Dimmu Borgir and Emperor. At first, I preferred Dimmu's material...but, years later...I'm definitely more of an Emperor fan. There are many layers to Ihsahn's music; it really does grow on you after awhile. Ihsahn is not only a good composer, but he's a killer guitar player. I dig his Guitar World articles/videos; I've learned a lot from them.

Try Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk by Emperor, it doesn't sound cold at all (to my ears, anyway).

Yeah that's my favourite album by Emperor. But it's just his new stuff, I love ye olde stuff. I guess it's just my opinion though.

Anthems is by far Emperor's best, but the mix is terrible. It doesn't do justice to the amount of stuff which is going on.

But Ihsahn's mixes are really dry, you can't really say the same thing about Devin's stuff.

That's right, Ocean Machine has a dense but good mix.

This is great news, always been a fan of Ihsahn, and he and Devin have some pretty compatible musical choices. its so easy to imagine Devin doing the 'DEEEEP DEEEEP DOOOOOOOWN!!' verse in Undercurrent.
