Nope, actually what I'm looking for IS a progressive drummer, but one that does grinds and stuff as well, with tight snare attack, a balnce hit between cymbals and drums, and tight feet.

Been looking online, this Bobby Jarzombek cat seems to be pretty amazing. Have you heard of him?

Who else could do it?

Well, there's the dude from Cynic. Wikipedia says Sean Reinert. He's pretty awesome and dynamic. You'd get a lot of drooling fans with that collaboration, no doubt about it.

There's also that Danny fellow from Tool. I don't like Tool at all, but his drumming is super neat. If you could rope him in, you'd automatically gain a couple thousand very obnoxious fans. And then some others, too. His playing is pretty dynamic and powerful, subtle when it needs to be. Really too bad the rest of his big band is awful.

Gavin is a pretty good idea, though I'm not sure just how well-equipped he is to handle the wild drum bashing that is bound to ensue over the course of this album. I bet he'd give it a try, though, and history has shown him to be interested in and comfortable with side projects and so forth.

There's the obligatory Mike Portnoy reference here. I think it would be interesting to see him in a project where he is really stretched, not just playing his usual stuff. I bet he's got a ton more juice in him than seems to appear in a lot of his projects.

And don't, in my opinion, work with the guy from Meshuggah, the guy from Opeth, that old fart in Metallica, any power metal drummer, or any drummer who can't do a fill without hitting the bass drum seventy two times. There. There's my input, for the one and a half cents it may be worth.

If you're talking about Daniel Luttick being a Gene clone I can assure you that's he's not. He's a well grounded, passionate drummer with a thorough background in all styles. There's only his metal stuff on the internet though. I really amn't a metal fan in the slightest apart from Alien and some Opeth(very little but what I like, I love). I love John Williams, Shawn Lane, Danny Elfman, Ennio Morricone, Rackmaninoff, Massive Attack, Gordian Knot..... anything skilled with genuine emotion behind it. I know this guy would understand you completely, it's just the fact that there's not much of his playing on the internet apart from metul. Just a suggestion. I wish you could see him really play. Gavin Harrison'd be a great fit too. He'd be well up for it methinks. He's collaborated with randommers on the internet for the love of music. 'tis rare these days.

And Jarzombek is pretty talented. I've only heard his work with Demons & Wizards, but he's got a lot of speed and technicality. Almost no flavor to him at all. Might as well use your drum machine, Dev. That's my opinion, again, for the small amount of value it's got.

Sean Reinert, hmm... someone has been already offered him
Bryan "Brain" Mantia
Flo Mounier
Drum Machine on ZTO... why not? One of the best drum-machines I've heard.

Dev, don't you think about doing smth with Sean Malone or Les Claypool on bass?

Yes Jarzombeck is a phenomanal drummer. That school clip on youtube always gets me going. How about Marco Minnemann (http://www.myspace.com/marcominnemann) or Jojo Mayer for something very different!
Marco'd work great. Look at a good few different clips to get a better idea. He's got a great sense of humour too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHft4OR7Rus
+ he's been in that necro something extreme metal band.

I already mentioned The Old Fart from Metallica back on page 3 or 4. I think he'd make a fucking EXCELLENT choice. Hehehehe. Not too progressive, though.

I'll cast a vote for Sean Reinert. Amazing player with a really unique style.

Danny Carey was a great suggestion as well. Tool makes albums once a decade or so, so the guy has to have some time on his hands.

And if you're thinking progressive, Virgil Donati would bring some very interesting possibilities that go way beyond just metal.

I had always loved the way Ed Warby plays the drums, also there's another great drummer that worked with the mars volta a few years ago, his name is Jon Theodore. Right now only them came to my mind.

I know this is kind of a ridiculous suggestion, but I do have a friend who is an extremely tight drummer. One of the bands he plays in won the chance (Through talent, not luck) to play at Bloodstock, they're getting big-ish in ENgland. Blah blah.

Anyway, he plays drums like how oyu would want. Tight, balanced, progressive, can rip them to pieces when you need it and then sit on a groove for hours and not drop a beat.

His personal Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/blast_vader

And two of his band myspaces (DIfferent bands):

But yes, feel free to hit me for being so ludicrous to suggest him.

The Dev wrote:Ok, question:

Who (other than Gene) are your favorite drummers?

Mario Duplantier and Martin Axenrot! I think Mario is amazing, he just compliments everything in Gojira's music so well... I can't really explain more, and I guess there are tons of people who know drummers better than I do.

edit: And I'd have to give a +1 to Reinert as well.

Seconded.

Also, Jason Rullo (Symphony X) and Sean Reinert (Cynic) are both amazing.

^Mario of Gojira is a good call also.

i have no idea if he grinds or does blast beats stuff, but I just know Morgan Agren (I think that's his name) was so amazing in Sol Niger WIthin just because of the whole Jazz vibe with the metal. Sean Reinert is a cool drummer and a cool guy (met him last month)...VERY musical and very progressive. I'm sure these guys could blast beat with that method ive seen where you sit the stick on the snare rim ...oh wait heres a vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RZhKrmZcw8

From what I've heard...Marco Minneman (spelling) is amazing. Worked with Millard Mulch and Necrophagist I think. Nile drummer was crazy fast but not too prog i think. I think Millard himself (Carl King) drums...dont know tho.
