All hail Ziltoid!

Well, one thing that any Devin fan knows is that ideas change and grow. Previously we reported: “Also occupying his time in the past month has been work on his puppet show. The first puppet is coming together with Devin just sculpting the finishing touches. The main character is Ziltoid the Omniscient, an alien with ideas on destroying the Earth. It will consist of five minute episodes with Ziltoid interviewing artists and musicians, seeking from them some reason not to blow up the world. He is working with many other people on the project including Travis Smith (metal CD layout master), Marcus Rogers (Vampira video), among others. Ziltoid will be beaming episodes to the web when he sees fit, and he may be releasing Ziltoid merchandise later in the year. Ziltoid’s theme song is already written and will be made into a video as well.”

As it happens, the inspiration to do a theme song evolved into a full-length concept CD in the vein of Strapping Young Lad meets Punky Brüster. And no, this is not just a fleeting teaser in danger of being pushed aside in favour of more pressing matters. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered in February due for an early summer release on Inside Out and HDR. Devin played all of the instruments on the record with the assistance of the Drumkit from Hell (thanks Fredrik!). The artwork is by Travis Smith.

The story as follows (without revealing too much): Ziltoid The Omniscient, a 4th dimensional alien has come to earth and is currently hovering five miles above Qatar. Beaming messages to the earth, including video, music, and words, His Omniscient-ness has one dimension up on us humans, allowing him control over time. But, in order to bend time he requires the perfect fuel - BLACK COFFEE - found in abundance on only one planet in the omniverse... Earth. He plays guitar and sings, is moody and a bit sensitive, with his first record due in late June. Surrounded by nymphs and prancing plasma beings, the album was produced by Devin Townsend in the hangar of the Ziltoidian space barge. All hail Ziltoid and his Infinity metal! Prepare your finest brew!

Ziltoid doesn't want to destroy the earth now...he just wants to be known as the best guitar player and get lots of chicks.

Damn! Travis Smith continues to WOW! me with his seemingly unended talent. First with all his "standard" CD covers; then with the more Marvel Comics style with Iced Earth and Demons & Wizards; then with the latest releases for A Triggering Myth and Subterranean Masquerade; and now Ziltoid. Truly outstanding work. He's definitely not to be pigeonholed into one style.

I cannot wait for this CD!

I am definitely down with this. Very cool. Seeing the cover makes it a bit more real for me. I got that little flutter in my stomach I always get when a new Dev album is on the horizon. Just to be different, I'll say... excellent!

Pleasant surprise that I was right about the "Devin Townsend presents" line.

And the birth of a new genre: BLACK COFFEE METAL!!
