That was an awesome cover

Fear Factory's covers are good also. Except 'I Will Follow'. Metal bands should refrain from covering U2. 'Millenium' is awesome, listening to the original song by Killing Joke right now. Between the two, Burton's vocals are alot better

I agree, too. One of the most emotional pieces of music i've ever heard.
Some other good covers transforming (or transcending) the original:
- Type 0 Negative: Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young)
- Therapy?: Diane (Hüsker Du)
- Crosby, Stills & Nash: Bluebird (The Beatles)

plus the aforementioned Imagine and I'm Easy. Also the classic, Dylan's All Along The Watchtower by Hendrix. Greatness!

There's that one Depeche Mode song that really sucks but gets covered a LOT and the covers almost always sound good.

I forget the name.

edit: kinda off topic, but while we're on the topic of covers... who wrote the original All Along the Watchtower? Bob Dylan's version is so much better than Hendrix's.

I was just about to mention Cinnamon Girl. I love the bass in their version.

I love that version of Mad World from Donnie Darko, but the Tears for Fears one doesn't really do anything for me at all.

And on the subject of Beatles, althoguh i absolutely love the original, I actually like Michael Jackson's cover of Come Together

Ah yes, that's a very good song. A very good song at the end of a very good movie! Although I didn't know it was a cover.

Tori Amos did a great version of the Rolling Stones song Wild Horses. Although this is one of the few Stones' songs I like anyway.

Fuck me, what's wrong with people in this thread? Killing Joke >>> Fear Factory, Jaz Coleman >>>>>> almost everybody in underground music and especially Burton C. Bell. How old are you guys that you like these covers better than the original versions from the mid 90ies...?

As for IMPROVING a song: Waltari's cover of Madonna's "Vogue", Snuff's "By The Rivers Of Babylon" (every Snuff cover as a matter of fact) and Excel's "Message In A Bottle" come to mind. And arguably Voivod's "Astronomy Domine".

We just like it when it sounds heavier? I find the vocals ten times better on Fear Factory's cover of Millenium

The sad thing is that the FF cover (as well as the whole album production) sounds horribly thin, flat and lifeless, special thanks to Toby Wright, who can't handle a powerful metal production. The Killing Joke (Cybersank mix) original blows this cover out of the universe, even in term of heaviness. Seriously, do you think the drums and guitars sound more powerful on this FF cover?

And it doesn't get any more charismatic than Jaz Coleman on vocals. Bell is a schoolboy compared to him. But maybe that's just me speaking as a brainwashed long time KJ listener. :P

*EDIT*

Oh, and thanks a lot for your message! :o

Actually, I've just seen an TV ad for "Gears of War" on 360 with that version playing.
As incongruous as the music and vision are in this case, it did add rather a touch of poignancy about the whole thing.
