Not many people know about the original Nothing being recorded on 7 strings. The tension issue wasn't because of tuning down though; they struing them up as if they were the 8 strings without the high E but the tension issue came into it because the scale length was not appropriate for such low strings.

So basically the strings were too tense because they didn't have that extra few inches of neck. The 8 strings sound a lot fuller and more powerful as a result of their gigantic size. I don't even know how Meshuggah can play those fuckin things, they're apparently twenty five percent larger than a standard guitar! Yipes!

well, at least i was right about the tension having some influence in it, i´m happy enough :D

and btw, your HDAS track rules, i was listening to it on the bus today :D

Is it completely re-recorded? From what I've read, it's been remixed, remastered and rereleased.

i know for a fact that the guitars were fully redone.
I haven't paid too much attention to the rest, but the drum sound is REALLY REALLY different from the original, so i guess it was re-recorded too.
Bass and vocals, hell, i wouldn't know

As far as i know the drums are programmed. I received my package today and i´m a bit sad that it didn´t include the 3D-hologram-card (i guess it´s not in all special editions but only in the digipak special edition..fuck off)... But everything else is fine, i really like the guitars.

The drums on Catch 33 are programmed, but not on Nothing. Not as far as I know, at least. I think the drums are just remastered for the most part, with a couple exceptions such as Nebulous, which is slower than the original.

The existing drums weren't changed. Fredrik just added some extra drum sounds, like a cymbal or something. He made a post on the Meshuggah about it. I'll find it.

Fredrik said:

The only thing I've done is I re-recorded all the rhythm guitars cause they pretty much sucked IMO, re-recorded the guitarline-thing at the end of CEV, put a new crash cymbal on top of one of the old ones that was broken and sounded like shit, triggered the kick, snare and toms and mixed the whole thing from scratch and I also timestretched Nebulous before I recorded the guitars cause I thought it was way too fast on the old Nothing...

No vocal overdubs or drum programming... The drumprogramming was a thing we did on Catch 33 because we wanted it to have that kind of a machine like vibe and because it sounded great on that song... Nothing wouldn't be Nothing if it wasn't Nothing if you know what I mean =)

Tomas posted this:

Sorry to have to disappoint some of you guys, but the drums are not programmed, but we did use "drumagog" and changed out a particularly ugly sounding cymbal and we did re-record the guitars cause we felt the original guitar sound didn't quite measure up to what we wanted! We also re-mixed and tweaked the vocals.....
So ....enjoy or don't....

Here's to all you guys, you're great! Thanx for your thoughts and interest!

I got the disk as a jewel case within a cardboard slip sleeve and it came with the hologram card. I wasn't aware of there being a digipak version?!

Thanks! It's rather primitive compared to what I do now but it was a nice little moment. The shitty drum programming embarasses me though.

I have the same version but without card. I think i will contact Nuclear Blast. Don´t know about a digipak, just thought i´ve read something about "digipak with hologram...".

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!MESHUGGAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh, shit, this isn't Blabbermouth.

although i wouldn't think someone who made comments like that really liked meshuggah for what it is.

although i totally agree with you :D

i like meshuggah quite a lot. i just found "nothing" really really boring.

Strange as it may sound, I liked Nothing because it was so monotonous. It's great to throw on as background music for fixing stuff, working on art, doing anything, really-- That's the reason I like alot of their other albums as well, actually... Though I might get smacked for saying I like Meshuggah because they're boring. :P Except for "I", that's my favorite release by them... And the only one I can really listen to while doing nothing else.

I'll have to agree on that, I love "I" to death. It's the most well-organized chaos I've ever heard. Best song ever made if you ask me.

Nothing and DEI are their best albums.

Honestly I didn't like "I" very much. Catch 33 was more of the same but it was executed much better in my opinion.

i actually loved it because of it's simplicity. Something to get your mind a chill, i've been needing it nowadays. And the drum programming does have this little section that sounds a bit funky, but what the hell :D

and HAH
thank god
my drummer ear isn't gone, i knew that they weren't programmed :D
