RIP King of Grunge Layne Thomas Staley
Aug 22nd 1967 - April 5th 2002

The self titled album was the one that got me into AIC. Ver under-rated album. It's VERY dark, i love dark music.

RIP Layne

Favourite Alice In Chains album would have to be Dirt. Hands down.

Sooooo many good songs on Dirt. In 1992 I had only been playing guitar for a few years and that album (amongst others) had quite a profound formative effect on my playing and my songwriting. Them Bones is one of the first songs that I really remember being aware of the time signature - the 7/4 verses are just awesome and rockin' as fuck. Dam That River, Rain When I Die, Rooster, Junkhead, Dirt, God Smack, Would? - all of them rock. I love Jerry's guitar sounds on the whole record, too. That album also opened my ears to the enless possibilities and permutations of vocal harmonies. I love how Jerry & Layne constantly trade off lead and background vocals.

Sap is also brilliant. Highly recommeded for dark, brooding acoustic music. Jar of Flies is pretty good, too, but not as brooding if that's your thing.

The self-titled album never really grabbed me for some reason. Except for the excellent God Am, one of the best songs they've ever recorded IMHO.

has anyone seen aic live? im too young to have had the pleasure. :(

listening to their live cd and watching bootlegs/dvds/unplugged makes me think that these guys rocked live.

speaking of bootlegs has anyone seen the hollywood '92 bootleg vid where layne dives off the amps?

that was sweet!

I wish I could of seen em live too. Layne had sucha powerful voice. I've heard some amazing live recordings from the early 90's, and some bad ones. They seemed to be hit or miss live. But when they were on, they were on.

They certainly were a pretty depressing band. The self titled album more than the rest IMO... it's very dark.
