My favourite ambient stuff is Susumu Yokota. "Laputa" is really good in particular.

I also enjoy Murcof, Lustmord, Harold Budd, Brian Eno, Xanpha and Daniel Lanois. There is also some really incredible composer stuff that borders on ambient, the greatest imo being Edgard Varese... Olivier Messaien is great also.

I'm not too into ambient stuff that has beats and stuff per se. A much more interesting genre to me is "music concrete" (that last E should have one of those accent marks but I dont know how to make them). Greg mentioned Edgar Varese, he is one of the pioneers of the genre. Basically it's just the manipulation of existing sounds. Actually, that's technically what Devlab is. Anyways, my favorite artist of that genre by far is Mark Wingate or Jon Appleton. Try to find Mark Wingate's "Ode to the South-Facing Form"...it's freaking incredible.

What about classical composer György Ligeti? You know the music on 2001 - A Space Odyssey, right?

Ligeti's stuff in 2001 is spine-chillingly brilliant.
I have the 2001 Special Edition DVD/CD soundtrack. Masterful stuff.

And Lars, local Aussie dark ambient - Isomer. 8)

Tribes of Neurot are amazing, also. They are Neurosis ambient alter-ego and are equally as disturbing; sometimes moreso even.

And not as disturbing but equally as atmospheric in its own wonderful way is Zappa's Lumpy Gravy album.

Marcof - Muertes and Port Royal - Flares are my personal favourites right now. Also Aghiatris (sp?) are pretty fuckin creepy. Also Marconi Union - [Distance] is nice

I'm pretty stuck on Remembranza. And it's Murcof with a U, in case anyone wants to check this shit out. Mexican ambient sound-design guy who does glitch with strings and piano... incredible stuff.

Why hasn't anybody mentioned Robert Fripp? The man is a genius.

Well... I've only got one album of his, and that's a collaboration with Brain Eno (Equatorial Stars), but it's still excellent.
