...is a genre that I am slowly getting into and really appreciate and I'd like to get a bit deeper into it. So which artists/groups can the fine people on this board recommend? I'm especially interested in ambient that isn't noisy. Just quiet stuff. What I'm really digging is Bass Communion (SW side project) and Jääportit. And I'd like to check out Harold Budd, Brian Eno, Steve Roach and Lustmord some more after I only heard samples of their stuff. So...suggestions? :) And if possible, websites with sound samples would be neat-o...

If you want something more intense, I reccomend some John Zorn stuff, like Naked City, but that's more avant garde, but does contain some ambience. Masada does more ecleptic stuff as far as Zorn goes. Also his album IAO has some cool ambience.

As for heavier ambience, Sunn O))) does a great job at it, and the album the Melvins put out with Lustmord is nothing short of great in that department.

Another CD that comes to mind is Fantomas - Delirium Cordia, lots of ambience there.

I'm pretty good with this genre, so I'm sure I'll be able to think up more before too much longer or someone will mention something that triggers something else in my mind.

Check Boards of Canada, The Orb's "Orbus Terrarum" (they're not always ambient, much of their stuff is based on quite stron beats - but OT is 100% ambient) and Aphex Twin with his "Selected Ambient Works 85-92" and "Selected Ambient Works vol. 2" (rest of his stuff is not that calm, too).

^^ these are classics for me.

hmm, I don't listen to Sunn ambiently. :D

Really anthing can be ambient music if you turn your conscious attention elsewhere and let it affect a mood. Conversely even the most minimal of sound can be listened to actively and enjoyed like a normal 'song'.

David Toop's Ocean of Sound is a great book on ambient, and ambient listening.

anyone read any of his work? He does occasional pieces in WIRE and is of course originally famous for his DJing and various improv appearances.

I'll go dig up a list of ambient-y things I've been enjoying lately.

thanks! Well...I know all of the last mentioned artists, hehe. Here's a big Bohren lover! Been loving Black Earth and Sunset Mission for quite a while. Boards of Canada is pretty cool, I actually have listened to that mentioned The Orb record not too long ago and think I might buy it oneday. I think I'm more looking for quiet stuff, doesn't necessarily need any beats or noise.

something like this for example:

Aphex twin has some ambient stuff. Also try out Ulver, especially Blood Inside and Perdition City.

I am a big fan of Steven Halprin and David Friedman...

I also find that Musical Starstreams is a great program for finding new ambient, electronic, soundscape type stuff. VERY cool radio program that you can stream on your computer.

The Waveform Record Label is also a good source for this type of stuff. I am not too familiar with this style as I am just getting into it myself. But everything I have from this label so far is really good!!! :D

Lustmord is awesome, the lustmord/melvins split is too cool. For real ambient i have learnt to trust swedish record label COLD MEAT INDUSTRY. 90% of the albums on that label are amazing. Quite a lot of the music is very dark but you know its cool to be eeeeeeevul.

if you dig ambient stuff, try http://www.myspace.com/floodofrain

He's actually a user on this forum but doesn't come around as much. You may also recognise the bassist (clue: its not me).
