I'm kinda surprised there is no thread about this already, everyone seems to love the Olympics.
Everyone but me that is. I hate them. The Dutch are nuts about ice skating (the speed kind) for some reason, and usually we're pretty successful as well. So anywhere I look, it's all about the frikking Olympic skaters. On tv, on the radio, in the newspapers, on the internet. teachers at school, skating all the way. And it's just about the most boring sport I can imagine. The same lap over and over again by people in embarrassingly tight suits, noting happening at all.
Another thing is, as soon as something is labeled "Olympic", all of a sudden everybody loves it, no matter what it is. Yesterday, my mom was passionately watching the cross country skiing. Not knowing who the athletes are, who is good, what the rules are, not knowing anything, it approaches the excitement of skating.
We are supposed to be consuming the Olympics, and everyone buys it. I hate that.
Speed skating, figure skating, skiing, cross country skiing, longjump on skis, it's all equally boring. And people swallow it all, as long as it's labelled "Olympic".

As far as I care, the least boring sports on the games are the one that get the least media attention (arround here). Stuff like ice hockey, half-pipe snowboarding, sledding and curling.

Thank you for reading through my ranty. Now you can all discuss the irrelevant results of the boring, overhyped Olympic games.

A 19 year old Dutch lass got a gold metal yesterday. Speed skating.

We'll go nuts for Curling.

fuck the winter olympics...summer olympics are better because the ladies don't wear so many clothes!!!! :P At least outside!

Hehe. I do enjoy the winter Olympics to a certain extend but it's something that I get sick of after a few days because there's SO MUCH coverage. And it's not really about sports either...more like "my country is better than yours, blah". I don't care who wins. Germany sucks donkey schlong anyways.

Being an Aussie I'm more into the summer games, but I've had a quick look at the downhill skiing and it's pretty spectacular. Australia is so sports-crazy that we'd watch pretty much anything.

One of the few things we never get to see on free-to-air tv though is ice hockey, which sucks as it's such a kick-arse sport. It's the kind of thing Aussies would love too, if we had more sutable weather away from the mountains: it's fast, skillful and violent. Just like Aussie Rules Football! But with ice and too much padding.

If I didn't feel as bad as I actually do right now, I would laugh my ass off just by thinking of Curling...

I remember hearing that some other competition - don't know which one, but it must have been something far more athletic and spectacular - was kicked out in order to make room for Curling becoming olympic four years ago. I never really cared that much about athletics, but I considered this decision to be fucking ridiculous. Oh well, this was probably decided by people who actually label chess as "sports" ...

I enjoy the winter olympics more than the summer olympics - though Lars does have a point! - but that doesn't say much. I just saw a few minutes on TV and that's it. Maybe I'll watch a bit more the next days, but I'm not a fan at all (oh, except for Curling, of course. I LOVE Curling, you know)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks of it this way!!

Nascar vehicles tend to crash every once in a while.

Summer Olympics suck as well. Swimming is our national favourite in the summers, and it's pretty much the same as skating, but warmer. And we have to watch indoor cycling. And athletics. And rowing. Ugh.

And I was a bit serious about the curling actually... I've seen a bit of it a while ago and I was entertained. Although that might have been due to the stupidity.

I have a fundemental issue with all sports, including the Olympics. Mainly because of the pedestal that they are placed on, and the amount of money and attention the "athelets" receive! It is completely rediculous to me that anyone, let alone adults, should be receiving such fame and fortune for playing a fucking game. It's absurdity at it's finest!!! I mean come on...look at the NFL for example. Who can honestly give me ONE good reason that a football player in the NFL is worth 100's of thousands or worse, 10's of millions of dollars?! Because he can throw or catch a fucking oblong pigskin ball?! Cuz he can run fast down a field of astroturf whilst being chased by a bunch of guys trying to tackle him??? Whoopty fuckin' doo!!!! Yeah yeah yeah...I know..."he is putting his life on the line every time he takes the field", or "it is such a physically demanding sport"...I have heard those ridiculous arguments time and time again. You know what, if it is so damn hazardous to the health, find another career! Just cuz there are a bunch of sweaty neandertals who are ready to destroy him the second he touches the ball doesn't mean he should receive millions of dollars for it! That is just nonsense! I don't just hate football, basketball, baseball, Hockey etc. I hate racing just as much. NASCAR is just as bad! And what's more, what kind of example are these "sports heros" setting for our youth anyway? Everytime I turn around there is an athelete being arrested on drug charges, weapons charges, DUI, domestic abuse and so on. I want my future children and their friends looking up to that!!! It's bullshit, all bullshit!!!

I enjoy turning the olympics on from time to time. Love to watch women's figure skating (especially with this year's ...quality... of women), bobsledding, luge, snowboarding, stuff like that, the sports that are more of a rush, which is what I see the winter olympics as more of.

I'm with ya right there. If we got to watch that here, I could give Ryan and Beav shit...and mean it!

And Olympics...reasonably ambivalent. I certainly don't hate it.
Don't waste the hate on sport.

I like watching the Olympics. I'm doing it right now, actually. I think figure skating's kinda stupid. But, I'm impressed by the fact that they can do it. I know how hard it is and I can't fucking do it so I watch for that reason.

I love watching the skiing, the skating and the luge stuff. Come on, now, it takes such skill and devotion and stamina and muscle to do those sports. It has to impress on some level that there are humans capable of competing at that level. Well, it impresses me, anyway.

The speed skating is crazy 'cause those dudes are whirling around at 30 mph (what's that, like 45 kmh?) and that's fast! If I go 30 on my bike I'm like "Whoooooooa!" Now, you're on a little blade on ice going that fast!? Damn! And, then downhill skiers hit 60+ mph. That's fucking insane! There's no way I want to go that fast without some metal around me protecting me.

Oh, and don't act like crashes and shit don't happen. Look what happened to the women downhill skiers and lugers today. That's nuts! So, NASCAR and the Olympics both have the potential for disaster.

I like sports. And, I think that athletes, like artists, should get paid whatever they can extract from us. If Devin Townsend can manage to sell out 100K seat arenas at $50 a pop then I think he is "worth" that pay. Likewise, if some ball player can convince a team owner to pay him a $1 million dollars to knock a ball around or whatever, then more power to him. Face it, it's pure capitalism. These team owners are paying exactly what the market will bear. None of those dudes are going broke.
