Axamenta. A progressive death/black metal band. And I mean PROGRESSIVE.

If you listen to their track "Threnody For An Ending", you will hear the lovely voice of Daniel Gildenlow of Pain Of Salvation fame. And although it's only a small part of the song, you can tell it's one of his better performances (which is saying a lot).

Edit: Full Gildenlow track here: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2474

I just found out they changed their name, and I guess their stylings.

So anyone who becomes an Axamenta fan will now want to check out He Came From The Sun. You can hear a teaser on their website:

Very uncool to quote myself here, but given that they've just been announced for progpower europe they deserve a bump!

Leprous: http://www.myspace.com/leprousband (Opeth influence notable)

Dark Suns: http://www.myspace.com/dunklesonnen (Incredibly dark prog rock/metal. Kristoffer Gildenlow of Pain Of Salvation played bass on their newest album)

Dial: http://www.myspace.com/thebanddial (Kristoffer Gildenlow's new project)

Lunatic Soul - Lunatic Soul

This is simply the best album that was released in 2008, and a long time before that, and probably a long time after.
Lunatic Soul is the solo project of Mariusz Duda, frontman of Riverside. It does have some obvious Riverside elements of course, but it's much calmer and more diverse, there's a hint of middle-eastern music even.
The mood, the atmosphere of the album is so intense. It draws you in to a real dark place. It's gloomy but beautiful and makes you never want to leave again. Amazing.

Riverside - Anno Domini High Definition

Short step really, coming from Lunatic Soul :P
Riverside are an accomplished prog band by now, having released 3 studio albums already. Out Of Myself, Second Life Syndrome and Rapid Eye Movement complete the Reality Dream Trilogy. The (upcoming) release of Anno Domini High Definition marks the beginning of a new series of albums, the Anno Domini High Definition series. Riverside have changed studios, producers and styles for this, but it's still very Riverside, and above all it's very good. This band just seem to get better with every new release. Lots of influences of (recent) Porcupine Tree, Pain of Salvation and Tool, I suppose.

I should really look into some of the other projects Mr. Duda has been involved in, he is proving to be a great musician.
