Talk about other artists here (even though they all rip off Meshuggah)

Absolutely. Jazz is like any other genre: it's all how you enter it.

Mats & Morgan!

These guys are among most ridiculously amazing and skilled musicians I've ever seen/heard, looks borderline impossible (and best of that, it isn't some tech-wank, it's catchy and listenable). And check airdrumming guy in the background of the second clip, hilarious :)

Drummer has cool drum and bassy chops, nice stuff.

These guys are pretty groovy! I'm nabbing their stuff right now! Love the bass!

More Jazz, Richard Bona, a bit of an African vibe (Cameroon, to be specific):

All this jazz stuff is great! I fucking love Morgan Agren. When the missus got me Fredrik Thordendal's Sol Niger Within the drums made me insta-cream myself. He's amazing.

This is apparently the best band to come out of Cork ever, and the next big Irish export... They're called Wiggle, and according to the MySpace what they play is Dub / Jungle / Electronica. They're interesting. Might take a few spins to get into them but they're nice and laid back. Whole thing washes over you in an awesome wave kind of thing in a lot of parts. I likes em.

They have a weird type of build-up. It's not actually like soft to hard or slow to fast... It's like you described it, in waves. I like.

Zu. Crazy jazz from I believe Italy. Patton has worked with these guys, and Bungle-heads will be a fan most likely:

Also, to get a little (extremely) classical, one of my all time favorite Jazz guitarists, Django Reinhardt, who actually had two of his fingers fused together in a fire I believe. In this version of Honeysuckle Rose, he's with the legendary Duke Ellington:

I think lots of people will be familiar with Django, because the entire soundtrack of the video game Mafia consists of his work. I have 1 CD, it's quite lovely :)

As for jazz I don't get much further than Miles Davis. The man's a legend, made music for 30 years or so, and was on the forefront of just aboot every new jazz style in those years. Amazing to see how many young players he chose for his bands grew out to be big stars, too. Add to that a lifestyle of addiction, women, cars and (relatively) early death, and you've got all ingredients for a legend :)

Agreed, but I think that might portray him a bit rock star-ish (probably not intentionally). Miles Davis was one of the greatest artistic minds ever. He had the raw ability to challenge himself. That's how he invented so many new styles of music. He would one day say something like "I'm not playing anymore ballads", and when asked why, claim it was because he enjoyed them too much. That's how he brought out multiple layers of one human being, more than any other artist ever. Granted he had a 50 year career, so there's a bit of a time advantage, but still, in my personal opinion, he didn't release a single bad album. Ever. He has a huge amount, maybe 60+. That's incredible.

One of my favorites by him, though:

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x52wqc ... 1992_music
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea ... d=38420646

This album was called Doo-Bop. It was his last, and he actually disappeared in the middle of it. It was made by him and future legendary hip hop producer Easy Mo Bee (Known for making a shit ton of Biggie's beats, "Everything Remains Raw" by Busta Rhymes, and more). If you listen, it's trumpet with a city vibe-ish beat behind it, pretty incredible, especially if you've ever lived in a major city. The first track is instrumental, and the second has Easy Mo Bee rapping over it, but it's more the early 80's type of rapping. Give it a shot.

But Biert, I'd say use that Miles Davis bridge to expand. From there, you have Coltraine, Chick Corea, John McLauglin, Mtume, shit the possibilities are endless. As you said, a lot of jazz artists went big after working with Miles.

Also, a jazz drummer I'm really into right now, Dave King. Here's The Bad Plus:

Okay, not to toot my own horn or anything, but the last major reccomendation that I made actually wound up being pretty popular. That one was the Deserts of Traun, and there are a lot of people on this board that really did love that stuff.

Well, I don't make any huge reccomendations on here unless I feel that fans of Devin can really enjoy what I reccomend.

This time it's God of Shamisen. It's a band run mainly by Kevin Kmetz. The man was already a master of the guitar, but just had to move on to other things that he found more interesting, much like Trey Spruance, former Mr. Bungle guitarist who shares many of the same band members (some from Estradasphere as well). God of Shamisen features Kmetz on the shamisen along with a group of very accomplished musicians, including Lee Smith on the drums. It's a mix of rock, metal, and folk along with one of, if not the best shamisen players along with it.

The album, Dragon String Attack is itself a very good mix of the music that is involved with the band. It heavily leans on the heavier elements of the band, but also shows off the more quirky, folksy, and overall more progressive elements that the band has to offer. This is very highly reccomended. I wouldn't reccomend this if I wasn't sure that fans of Devin wouldn't love this.

Danish progpop group called Mew. For all the metalheads here who really want to bend and break those barriers in your mind. And everyone else as well.

Zookeeper's boy and 156 should be more than enough for converting even the truest of the true. :D

FUCK me is that good stuff! Only problem I have is that it sounds like it's recorded too "hot", and the distortion spills over the sonic spectrum a bit. I'd prefer to hear this a bit more pristine.

THANK YOU FOR THE SUGGESTION!!!!! This, along with the band Frost and Ki are making me a VERY happy man!

Liking the Demians and Mew (from their Myspace) nicely. Frost, I was about to write off as having too much discordant squealing for my ears until I got to the 'No me no you' track and that one grabbed me.

I've been waiting for their new album for a while. Apocalypso is an incredible song. Ay, link them a video.

I have to rep my city for a second:

Alt/indie: Heather Perry And The ______S (pronounced blanks) http://www.myspace.com/heatherperrymusic (Listen to These Appetites and City Song)

Experimental post-metal: Minsk http://www.myspace.com/minsk

And even hip hop, for the less cynical on the board: Rubberoom (Who were on Techno Animal's [J.K. Broadrick] "Brotherhood of the Bomb" album, and retain that darker vibe): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVRk2NzeFYg

Something for everyone, hopefully. I'll wait a few pages, then bust out some more Chi-town locals, let you all get acquainted with the scene. It would be sweet if you did this for your areas, too.

He did freaky drum solo with drumming on completely un-drummey parts of the drumkit (like cymbal stands etc.) when I've seen them. Fun band.
