Anyone here enjoys Vangelis too?

Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre and a little bit of Mike Oldfield comes to my mind when hearing Ghost...anyway this album is a piece of art...

Thanks for the pointers here gentlemen.

Anyway, still digging this album. Blackberry, Ghost, Fly, Feather, and Texada FTW.

I personally love how unapologetic this album is in it's happiness sometimes. Now with all four under my belt, it's really hard to say which ones I prefer. Without listening to the other ones I think it's Ghost > Deconstruction > Ki > Addicted, but then I remember how awesome Addicted is when I listen to it. So I think my "favorite" will change with listens, but I'd say their all equal quality albums for very different reasons.

Not really, Devin's a guitarist first and foremost and you can't like Devin without liking guitar. 'Too much guitar' isn't something a fan could ever complain about, too much flute on the other hand....

For me,

Ki=Addicted>Deconstruction>Ghost

Okay, so after a few listens:

Didn't think much of Fly the first time rough, but liking it more and more each time. Very suitable opening.
Heart Baby is great. Probably the best "ambient" track/section on the album.
Feather is incredible. The "All your dolls and toys" line really gets me. It's so well constructed.
Kawaii is also awesome. Love that drone...
Ghost is awesome. Simple rhythm, simple idea, nice and happy.
Blackberry is pretty good. The first track that doesn't really hit the spot for me.
Monsoon is also good but doesn't hit me.
Dark Matters serves as a great opening for Texada, but not much more.
Texada is a great track. Odd rhythm but very cheerful. Love the "do you need some company" parts.
Seams is good, doesn't really stand out, but makes a nice, fairly non-intrusive acoustic song.
Infinite Ocean is great. It warrants its length and is nearly as good as Heart Baby.
As You Were doesn't really hit me... I like the A Monday reference but to be honest it's not a fantastic ending.

I guess I'm caught between split ideas with this album. Some of it is very much "listen to me" kinda stuff, like Ghost, Kawaii, the first half of Feather - you're supposed to really take notice of it, it reaches out and grabs you - "stuff happens". However, then there's other pure ambient stuff like Heart Baby, Monsoon and the last halves of Feather/Texada. Since the album starts off with a weighting towards the songs were "stuff happens", I'm sorta led into it like that, so the ambient tracks fail to live up to expectations. Do you get what I mean? It's like I'm in "song mode" sometimes and in "ambient mode" for other times, and being in "song mode" makes the ambient bits feel a bit boring - not that they are, it's just put into that perspective by the rest of the material.

Don't get me wrong, either, I adore ambient music (Stars of the Lid, Bass Communion, Tim Hecker, etc) but the album feels like it jumps between the two a bit too much.

Still - excellent album. Can't wait to see it all live!

Been ignoring this thread, had a Devhead friend tell me this before I bothered to look here...my bad.

Yay! I got my wish. I'm going on a three-day trip to a little mining town for uni next week, to do a nature photography project. And all I've been thinking about is how killer it would be to have Ghost on my iPod for it... :D

Gotta agree. I dig the concept of the flute...but I'm not sure how well it worked in practice. I'm not a pro, but IMHO, the flute took up to much space in the mix and drowned out the subtle ambience in several places (e.g. Monsoon kinda went off kilter because of it). I think it was groovy in Fly and Feather but it could have been removed from most of the rest. Maybe the proper release will do it some justice (as we are listening to a crappy rip at the moment). Can't wait for the pre-order to come in as I still love the record.

Despite all that, I know Dev's a huge Paul Horn fan so I give him props for following his gut and giving that idea a go.

Yo guys!

Ghost is how I wanted it. I love it. The songs are as long as I wanted to hear. I totally, totally understand how it could bore and annoy folks.

Country and folk music are what I was raised with. I would be happy playing bass in a country band tbh.

Flute is my favorite instrument. I can totally see both those elements rubbing people the wrong way, and if it does... I was not meaning to be rude. I listen to this type of stuff (probably done much better) more than anything else.

I know this record (and Decon of course) has a bunch of people upset or insulted personally. My intention was to do what I set out to do, and I did it. I think the thing about what I do that is worth anything is the honesty. No matter how awkward it may come out. There has been some people who really like it too of course, sometimes a bit too much I think. But really, it's just a bunch of songs either way.

Getting ready for a year of touring. Hoping I can make all this work. I'm not afraid though, I've got great friends, a driven manager, a great family and some intelligent, supportive people that like to hear where the music has gone from time to time (thanks guys! :)

I've been doing a bit of a 'digital fast' lately...I get so wrapped up in the computer and I let other peoples opinions and ideas of what I should do or should have done clutter my mind up. It's all just phantoms ultimately.

I stand by all my decisions. Scatological humor and pseudo folk included. I never claim to be the best musician, smartest guy, best anything... I think I've got one thing going for me currently that I haven't in the past, and that is a willingness to try things that are important to me and am prepared to fail. (epically if need be...)

This project is my contribution to a huge world of music.

I appreciate that what I have done may not work for some of you. I urge you not to buy anything I do if it bothers you. Please. I would expect to do the same myself. As much as it may seem like I'm trying to sell people everything lately, thats just part of the game with labels, managers, lawyers, band etc. I hope you can see that. I hate to think that people are spending money on what I do out of loyalty or obligation, that makes me feel ridiculous. Download it, check it out. If you like it... awesome! Any support is great! If you really dislike it, good lord, don't buy anything.

Going to NY in the morning to do a video for Juular that will surely get folks knickers in a twist... wait till you see this, hoo boy... :)

Not sure why anyone would get upset or personally insulted. I mean yeah everyone's free to like or dislike, but it's nothing personal, or shouldn't be anyways. Dev you listen to Bon Iver correct? Can't remember for sure but I think I remember you saying something about it. I definitely hear a bit of that kinda stuff on Ghost, and I likes it!

I really like Ghost, more than I thought I would, and I thought I was going to like it to begin with. I don't get the people comparing Ghost to Decon, that's like comparing apples and circular saw blades... a comparison to Ki (which is still quite different) or even the experimental CDs would make more sense... Ki remains the one Dev album after all these years that I have to give a thumbs down to. I just don't "get it" (if there is anything there to get...) and am convinced at this point that, after having listened to Ghost, which is everything I wanted Ki to be, I'll probably never bother trying to make myself like Ki again. But I'm glad Dev made Ki for his sake, and I'm happy for all of the folks out there who really like it. If it was a necessary step to get to Addicted, Decon, and Ghost, then it served its purpose and I will appreciate it for that reason.

Dev, keep doin' whatchya do, there are alot of us out there that tried too hard to please everyone BUT ourselves and ended up throwing our careers away by doing so. I'd hate to see you be one of them (not that I'm really worried about it, if it hasn't happened by now...)
