I'm at a loss to describe the show last night. I've been a Devin Townsend fan since he came to Regina on a failed night of attempted music back on a cold October night in 2003. At that point I was first getting into music outside of mainstream/radio, I had never heard anything of his (or most of the music I now listen to). The reason that night was a failed attempt was because after Zimmer's Hole struggled through technical problems all set (and besides that imagine me, a guy who only listened to mainstream at that point taking in something like Zimmer's Hole), The Devin Townsend Band made 3 attempts to start their set, only to flip a breaker 3 times. At that point it was decided they just couldn't play, and the rest of the show (their set and SYL's) was cancelled. On the up, Gene did an acoustic drum solo for like 10-15 minutes, a rare occurrence.

Here's the other upside. I don't even remember what the song was that the DTB played to start, and I didn't even get any vocals out of it (as that's as far as they got the last time the power cut), but it was enough to blow me away. That failed attempt at playing Regina changed my life. I immediately went and bought Accelerated Evolution the next day, which remains my favourite album of all time.

Last night, after 8 long years, Devin Townsend returned, and it was worth the wait. I did get to see him in Saskatoon earlier this year on the COB tour, but this was something else. Of course, fittingly, he had technical issues ALL NIGHT and couldn't get his in-ear monitors to work properly. Could tell he was frustrated, but the show went on! The song selection was great, I'll be honest, I could spend a long time listing the songs I wish he had played, but unless he was playing a 5 hour set I wouldn't get everything I want haha. Specifically I was stoked for The Greys and my all time favourite, Deadhead. I still can't get over that I witnessed that live.

Devin it appears that you read these forums when your hectic schedule allows, if you read this, THANK YOU for coming back to Regina, and please come back again. Third time's a charm perhaps and you won't have issues with gear next time? That's all, I just wanted to fan rant!

Sorry I started a thread about this in the DTP sub forum, could a moderator move it here if necessary? (DONE. Coma) There was more to the post than just the review, back story about Devy in Regina included, but if it should be in here I've got no problem having it moved and apologize if I put it in the wrong place by mistake.

Show was awesome, plagued with technical issues (didn't affect the sound out front, his in-ear monitors wouldn't work all night). This was a long time coming for Devin Townsend fans in Regina, and well worth the wait.

My first Devy show had technical problems too - Bloodstock 2010, where all the gear went missing so they started late, and then lost the click track (but tore through the set anyway). I've been lucky enough to see him six times since then!

In Calgary, he forgot to change his effects between Disruptr and Supercrush!, so he had to start it a second time. That was about the extent of any technical issues.

Oh, now that you mention it, he had to start "Bend It Like Bender!" three times at Rock City earlier this year. First time he came in too late with the vocals, and the second time he was playing in the wrong tuning! Still, like he said at the "Ki" show, "It makes it human, right?" And it does!

Ahh yes, I remember the BILB moment in Nottingham. Bless 'im. :3
And Bloodstock '10 we heard the backing tracks to Addicted and Supercrush while the techs were flying around desperately trying to fix the problem. Pretty special stuff when stripped down, as much as when they're instrument-layered. :)

I just found the whole thing ironic since this was only his second appearance in Regina (SYL notwithstanding) and both times he's had issues with equipment that no amount of attempt to fix could cure. I'm just stoked that it didn't stop the show this time. To be fair I think I wouldn't have been able to grasp what I was taking in the first time around anyways.
