Hey! You're awake!

Had my second listen yesterday, but I was a little more distracted by other things than when I listened the first time. Still though, Supercrush-Hyperdrive is so freaking cool. And Universe In A Ball has been stuck in my head since I woke up this morning.

I'm aslo thinking about committing blasphemy and doing a tiny bit of editing of Resolve. I love the melodies of the opening verse and somehow it popped into my head that it might be cool to repeat that verse once after the first two "WE RISE!" sentences. Seems to fit, need to check; if it doesn't work I'll know why it is the way it is. Coincidentally, Resolve is the one track that hasn't exactly clicked so far. I mean, I like it, but maybe because I heard the youtube-snippet so many times I had slightly higher expectations from it. Ironically, Universe didn't click with me until I heard it again yesterday. Wow. Can't get it out of my head now...

Oh, and this is a fucking amazing album to be air-drumming to. Thanks to RVP for that.

More love for The Way Home!!!!
I swear this song totally got lost when Ocean Machine was getting mastered or something. That vibe....like Night, with a bit of Things beyond Things. Not really the beat...but just...that VIBE. Nine chords...

Hey man, I'm the king when it comes to mishearing lyrics!

"Yahweh! Yahweh! Yahweh! Yahweh!"

Though, in keeping with one of the common themes, it could very well be
"awake, awake, awake, awake"

Oh wait that's actually more likely and I was going by phonetic memory.

After near 10 listens, this is up there in my top 3 of the year (including the new Mastodon and Crack the Skye).

Even more prestigious is it's position in my top 5 Dev albums....

1. Ocean Machine
2. City
3. Terria
4. Addicted
5. Alien

Fucking fantastic work, have introduced the whole of our uni's rock society to it, and everybody is in agreement that it is awesome! Expect many many more pre-orders within the next few days :D

Supercrush and Resolve are the best songs for me so far. The rest doesn't really feel complete. I like it, some other chorus are excelent, but the rest of the riffs/singing that tie the songs together feel rushed/contrived, or just aren't my cup of tea. Come to think of it, i guess there aren't really standout songs here, just standout choruses. When i heard the teaser, which features most songs choruses, i thought, "wow can't wait to hear the whole thing"... then when Universe in a Ball premiered i thought "that's it? the whole song is the same riff of the chorus? with just a tiny change in the middle?". I was hoping it wouldn't be the same with the rest of the album, but it doesn't change much from that formula.
As for vocals, I really like Anneke's voice, but would've much prefer Devin to have sung the whole thing, he is top notch here, as usual. Although i must confess, i'm not a fan of his operatic style (annoys me somewhat). And he tends to use it more than ever in his recent output.
Anyway, i think when i get the CD i won't give it many spins, since it's rainy Autumn, and i'm not in the mood for happy summer music.
Ki will keep me entertained/comforted.

Addicted to me feels like Ziltoid, more of an experiment in style with a different approach than a solid Devin Townsend record. Both good, both better than most music out there, but not in the same league as his other major work.

Remember when AE was the poppy, straightforward Devin record when it came out? Compared to Addicted, sounds way more complex. We've come a long way.
I hope he keeps on doing whatever he pleases.

Mean Machine wrote:Haha, for some reason the beginning of "Resolve!" put a huge smile on my face.

Great album, extremely consistent. And the mix sounds MASSIVE.

I'd find it amusing if that laugh turned out to be Ginger after being asked his opinion on the tune.

I keep hearing loads of bits from everywhere and not all of them are Devy records.

swervedriver wrote:Dev initially said he wanted 'Addicted' to sound like a spaceship like the latest Nickelback album does... Mission accomplished and then some; this album sounds like a mobile galaxy!

It's glorious, totally ear cryingly gorgeous

Maizzi wrote:Yes! At first i thought it was a bit over-the-top to put exclamation marks on every song! But after listening the album i wanna tattoo an exclamation mark on my forehead!

that's just very funny. explains the feeling well - even with the hype, it completely understated its own arrival.

I don't really think AE sounds more complex than Addicted. Only longer.

Addicted songs have 3, 4 riffs tops. Even with it's barebones nature, AE has more diverse riffage and features more complex songwriting.
If you mean Addicted is more complex in its overproduction, then yes i agree.

Seems like I'm heavy into editing Dev track this evening... I guess it depends, I think it's nice to have a little more time before the real climax comes, but the more I hear the original track the more I begin to appreciate it. :)

This will probably be ignored but are there Futurama quotes in Bend It Like Bender!? You know the "Game over losers" commentary parts. I'm not a big enough Futurama nerd to know for sure but I could have sworn that Bender said those parts.
