Face your chaos, know who you are!

My thoughts on Ki after a week’s worth of absorption-

I've been a fan of Devin since 1997. Unlike many fans, I gravitated to more of his non-SYL releases yet always considered SYL the quintessential metal band through my years of gigging and 'all things heavy'. I have always hoped he'd make an album like Ki. There's not much of a real mental challenge in making music that is complicated, chaotic and demanding to the listener. But to make something that is stripped-away, honest, and wide open -and groundbreaking- is damn-near impossible.

I'd like to think I can relate to Devin in a few ways. I had my own stint of musical achievement in my early 20's, and built my life around it before too long. But it became a ridiculous task where the hour-long set became more important than reality. My education, professional career, family relationships, etc. suffered for a long time, all to be this 'noble guitar warrior that screamed for screaming's sake', and had jack shit to show for it in the eyes of those that truly mattered to me. I eventually broke down, left it all and never looked back. About 4 years ago I went to see SYL, and after their set I handed Devin a thank you letter, shook his hand and went on my way. I did my best in the letter to explain how he even at that time inspired me to go my own way. I digress. Not long after I got married, moved across the country for a dream job, finished college, and now have two kids. And, I make music in my living room whenever the hell I feel like it, for those that truly matter to me. I'm at peace.

So when I listen to Ki it definitely has a lot more significance to me than any other DT record that came before it. Ki expresses 'transformation' better than any album in memory, whether you know Devin's past or not. While I know Devin has said Ki is an exercise in having nothing to prove, I think he's proven so much throughout. Most famous artists were high as a kite on something to get into ‘that place' of creativity and conveyance. He's now done it unfiltered yet with 100% clarity. I rank it higher than Ocean Machine because of the genuine depth it has. It is mature, serious, laid-back, in your face, and unassuming all at the same time. But memorable. There are layers to peel away because he and his peers thought to put them there. The more you hear it the more you realize it wasn’t just chance. It was all planned and executed. I wish the young Strapping fan would get it. Hell, I hope Strapping gets it. It is not metal, it is music. It is a sign of things to come, and I am eternally grateful that each passing year there is a new palette of sounds, colors and experiences to look forward to. Ki will age better than any bottle.

Thank you Devin for what I give 9.5 out of 10. The .5 is lost because if any newbie asked me for the best representation of your music, I’d hand them Ki. And they still wouldn’t know what makes it so special.

Were we meant to get 3D glasses with the Ki album, or was that just a little joke? I have yet to look at the cover and such with 3D glasses...

You were supposed to get them from the website or something, but it didn't happen. The cover totally works with the red/green glasses, you just have to get a pair somewhere.

- Yet.

Experiments have pointed out that red/blue glasses however do not work.

So, since the scene leak of Ki, I've been listening to it at LEAST once every 2 days.

It's still an excellent album from start to finish. :D

What do you mean leak? I bought mine a couple days ago, and I live in Australia. We usually get stuff way after it's released everywhere else.

Dev,

I have a few questions regarding your guitar tones from album to album.

Having listened to your work for a dozen years now I've noticed the subtle changes in your rhythm tone from album to album.
I know some of it is always the production (City versus Terria), equipment (Peavey versus Mesa), etc, but I'd think it is a natural thing for tone to change as years go by.

With the four albums to come, I believe I read that you have written all of the songs all at the same time. Are you concerned that your current setup will 'lock you into' a set of tones that you find to be best now, but might feel different about later? Are you conscious of things like your rhythm sound as much as previous efforts, or is it more of a "fuck it, sounds good to me" thing now?

Trust me, your rig and axes are as signature and as mammoth as it gets. Maybe I'm just looking for your perspective on how much tone matters to you in comparison to other efforts and environments.

Thanks!

quite the contrary my fellow melbournian. in most cases we receive cds earlier to match up with the japanese release date. which in most cases, they receive albums first

True. I got Voivod's "Infini" last weekend, and it's not released yet in North America.
