The place to speak about Dev's current projects, and everything yet to come

It's my understanding that some of your DTB albums were recorded with 6505s (Correct me if I am wrong). Was there a conscious decision you chose the 6505 over the 6505+? I ask this because I'm on the market for a 6505 for DTBish sounds, and I don't wanna get a + and be disappointed. I'm going to try it out myself within a week, but I might as well give it a shot here and maybe I'll get an answer before then :) Thanks!

My advice would be to get whatever you like, and not necessarily what Devin likes. You're going to be the one paying it and playing it, so it would seem to me that your opinion would be the most important.

Definitely, no doubt. That's why my opinion when I play it next week would rule supreme. :) I'm just a bit curious to see if Devin had the chance to use the 6505+/5150 II, why he went with the 6505/5150.

Devin used 5150's up until Alien/Synchestra where he switched to Mesa's.

He posted a long time ago these settings for his 5150:
Pre 5-6
Lo - 6
Mid - 2
High -2.5
Post - 4
Res - 6
Presence - 7

High gain channel, high input.

-----------------------------------

It's important to note that the settings he showed off in the Great Average Guitar video are completely different though (mids were at 0)

I will also note that a lot comes from using active EMG pickups and a strong right hand technique. This does not even go into all the delays, echoes and other crap going on in the effects loop or that are added during mixing.

While the 5150 is a great 'metal' amp you will not get pleasing tones out of it in your bedroom - it really needs to be cranked.

And if I can elaborate on that....the clean tone sucks total donkey scrotum.......a-b/y the 5150 with a roland jc-120 or a budda.

Also.....the very first 5150's with the "EVH" logo on the panel sound totally different imo......I am not sure if Dev has this one, but I know Robb Flynn from Machine Head does. Love him or hate him, he has one of the heaviest tones ever.

I play at gig volumes at home (neighbors can't hear it), so that's not a problem. I scrapped the idea for a 6505 unless I get a really really good deal. The money would be better spent going towards my Diezel Herbert fund I plan on picking up this summer. Thanks though, saving those settings :)

5150 technically doesn't have a clean channel so you really can't slight it for that.

EVH 5150's and signature 5150's have no structural difference - they were shipped with different tubes though. I think Flynn has about ten 5150's...

Excellent amps. There's not really any amp quite like it.
I've had a Mesa Boogie Dual Recitifer, which reeks of quality but it can be pain in the ass to find its sweet spot. But it kicks ass for sure. My friend owns a Diezel Herbert and it's also an incredible tool for a hardrock/metal player. Though, I have the tendency to think it lacks a bit of character. It does the Mesa Boogie/6505 thing quite well... and it can also sound a bit like a vintage Marshall, but I really don't think it has its own voice. The cool thing is that its probably the best built amp on the market and it is completely noise free even when you crank it.
Myself, I've settled wit the Laney VH100R. I'm just a sucker for the british crunch and if you have a strong right hand, you can do the metal thing with this amp too.
I'm also quite interested in the new Marshall JVM 410H. It seems like a cool and diverse amp + plus I saw Fredrik of Opeth play through it and I almost liked his tone better than Mikael's. Blasphemy?

Wow, really? Mikael uses the GT100L doesn't he?

Honestly I can't stand Fredrik's tone live, it sounds horrible, especially when he's playing the lead part of Godhead's Lament. Great when he does the solos though.

Since we're talking about amps, can anyone recommend an amp for getting good heavy tones that will sound good at bedroom volumes? Preferrably a valve amp, as I like the way they sound, unless it's possible to emulate them well at bedroom volumes.

Doesn't need to be any good for gigging, as I only play for my own entertainment. If possible, something I can get a good range of tones out of, heavy, mellow, and something that will handle very low tunings well.

I know bugger all about amps, in case you've not guessed already :D

Seriously: At home I only play through my Line 6 POD X3.
You can emulate a 5150, Engl Powerball, Mesa TripleRectifier etc. They all sound great.
Plus the Vox, Fender etc. emulations for clean guitar are also very good.
Think about it.

At the moment I play through Guitar Rig with headphones exclusively, as it gives me a better sound than anything I can afford right now.
I was just curious as to what's worth getting if I decide to trade up.

If I were you I would look into the Blackstar HT-5. Comes both as a head and a combo.

One mean little amp. Thinking about picking one up myself to use at home.

My guitar teacher has a Blackstar combo of some description, which sounds pretty sweet, so it's definitely on the list of amps I'd consider
