My dad has always dismissed Devin as "that dude my son likes who screams swear words alot." So the other day, he asked me if he could look through all of my CDs for something to listen to, and if I new anything he'd like. I recommended him, among other things, Accelerated Evolution. He then put that CD, (and also some Porcupine Tree, Opeth, stuff like that) on his iPod. So, today, he came up to me and said "Nathan, that Devin Townsend CD is amazing! The man has alot of talent." I feel like I won something today.
Thats cool man. I hate it when people dismiss heavy stuff, they just don't get it I guess. Suppose AE does have a broad appeal compared to SYL. Congrats of the victory.
Give him Ocean Machine next.
cool bands!
http://www.myspace.com/knorkesuedfrucht --> happy heavy pardy shit with a good shot of folk and a maniacal attitude
http://www.myspace.com/parityboot --> the more serious industrial metal stuff. loaded with samples, groove and atmosphere, rather syl-ish
I used to get frustrated that people dont appreciate musicians like Devin Townsend the same way I do, but it's obviously silly to think a majority of people will. Now I just fee grateful that I have something to listen to thats special to me, and if other people cant hear it, thats there loss.
Haha - awesome. Shows you all how you can't judge a book by it's cover.
I'm slowly getting my parents into it. My mum likes Hypergeek, now I'm just working on the rest of the album

The entire song or just the calm "Wake up, joy!" part? My best friend just started listening to SYL abit, he's obsessed with Wrong Side and Love?! Now I just have to get him into the Devy stuffs.
heh. I had the opposite issue growing up. My Dad was into hard rock/metal: Golden Earring, Black Sabbath, Led Zepp, stuff like that. I preferred country and pop; Juice Newton, Nu Shooz, Howard Jones, etc. So, my Dad got me started with Pink Floyd and then Ozzy, and I haven't looked back since.
Thanks, Dad!
Thanks, Dad!

I hate that as well - and girls in particular seem to stay away from heavy stuff; I can't talk to any friends about music because what I like is 'too heavy, too angry." I don't get it!?

I was thinking this myself as I read Nathan's post. Good call - OM is pretty versatile and easy to get into, no matter who you are. I'm actually trying to get my mom into OM, maybe not Regulator or Bastard, but the 'mellower' ones right now.
In any case, good job Nathan, your dad sounds pretty cool - how did he like the Opeth and the Tree!?!

I don't think he like Opeth very much, but he loves PT.he said Deadwing is his favorite

I've been slowly exposing my mum to some of my music. She's really into Pink Floyd and HIM at the moment (The Wall was a big hit), and she enjoyed the first part of Opeth's Lamentations DVD - all the Damnation tunes. I didn't want to push it further with the heavier stuff. Even some of Dream Theater's Live at Budokan went over well.
Now she understands why I freak-out over Mike Portnoy/DT every time they're mentioned on TV.
I should explain: my mom and dad are currently filing for divorce, so she's living with the hubby and I until the divorce is final and she has a nice place to live. We had an extra bedroom and bathroom, so it was a perfect situation for her. Most of the time the television is set to VH1's Classics Channel - it's virtually all music all day in our household. She's always been a huge Beatles fan, and she became familiar with a lot of different groups due to me blasting music in my bedroom constantly whilst growing up, or forcing her to listen to my cassettes in the car. Now she's grown quite interested in KISS, The Who, David Bowie (yay!), and she'll even sit through an entire That Metal Show...show.
I'm sure her fondness for The Beatles and The Rolling Stones has made it a bit easier, as opposed to my dad, who only listened to classical music until he bought a Harley and discovered Meatloaf and tattoos in his late 50's. Late bloomer.

You have to think about it in their shoes for a moment. For someone who is never into that kinda music, it does sound very aggressive. Fast beats and a fair bit of swearing tends to come off that way.

I personally adore heavy music, the only thing I really dislike is screaming. I don't mind Devins as much, but I think thats because its more of a harsh tone to his voice, rather than a bat screeching.
One thing that really irritates me is when people dismiss anything loud, and especially anything that has any screamed vocals at all, as "angry" or even "hateful", or whatever else. I've always found Devin's more recent albums to be quite empowering and triumphant a lot of the time... It shows a person too closed minded to realize that a certain type of element or sound doesn't have to mean the same emotion all of the time.

But I am a girl - and I still don't understand girls.

I actually agree with you about the screaming. Devin Townsend aside, because he can scream on pitch and it sounds good, I don't like screaming. I wouldn't pay good money to listen to someone amelodically scream. There's a right way and a wrong way to scream in music. Most people don't get it

Hmm I wonder how many girls in the world like screamy metal music, can't be many. I've never found any, as much as a I've looked or tried to convince them otherwise, by saying stuff like; "nah it's just more emotional if it's loud and screamy!"
I'm not a girl btw despite my pinky avatar!

Unlucky bro, i know quite a few girls who live for their heavy, scream orientated music and they love it! It also helps being in a metal band and so ive got first hand experience about telling them why people make this 'heavy' music. Man metal is so POWERFUL there is no other music like it, when your feeling down or depressed i find theres nothing like a hooky, groovy guitar riff powered by bass and pounding drums with some guy giving all his emotion into these vocals, it is just awesome. You can gain so much energy from metal its unbelieveable. I appreciate all other types of music for what they are but if i want something to get my blood flowing and put a smile on my face, metal is the way. You just have to make people appreciate the underlying grooves and musicianship, i mean goddamn! Its probably one of the hardest styles to play on guitar and thats why i love listening/playing it so much.
hey nonny nonny, Devy's gonna get you!
