The place to speak about Dev's current projects, and everything yet to come

Ok so recently I listen to all my music on my PC, so I decided to rip all the Devin Townsend and SYL albums at WMA lossless. Now, I don't know if anyone else has encountered this, but I'm hearing bits and pieces in songs that I swear I couldn't hear before. Especially on Alien and Synchestra. For example, just today I was listening to 'Sunset', and when it reached the part with the arpeggios, (just after the background vocals bit), I realised I could hear an extra effect on Ryan's snare, on every second hit. Sort of an echoey 'pop'.
It kind of gave the song a new dimension, which was really cool. Like on the 'Alien' making of doc where Dev shows off abit of a song with all these seemingly random samples and effects, things like that I can actually hear now.
Not so much 'lossless' as 'gainmore'!

It's a damn good excuse to sit through the entire discography again. Not like I need an excuse but y'know  .

Anyone else hear things like this??

maybe the output resolution/frequency gain difference on your cd player isn't as good as your computer's soundcard.
And yeah, i still gotta order my Alien to try and get every single random noise in there :D
Btw, is there any chance at all that i find the Alien Special Edition? (With the making of)

If you're ripping at lossless, it really doesn't matter what decoder you use...it's lossless! The Apple lossless decoder is actually pretty good in terms of file size.

Of course it does matter! FLAC is open and free (as in beer, as in speech). No patents, no royalties, no DRM, none of that crap. And that benefits everyone :)

Lossless files are triumphant, it's not the same if it's not >1000 kbps

WMA Lossless isn't truely lossless. From what I remember it maxes out at around 700kbps.

All my Devin Townsend music is in FLAC and I hear something new everytime I listen to it. It was only a few months ago that I realised there was actually a sound at the start of "Truth". I always thought it was just silence, but I guess that's just me not paying attention.

Don't quote me as gospel on this, but I'm not sure that's right. I have a few albums in lossless WMA that claim to be in 1065kbps.

Bitrates don't say anything about sound quality anyway. Usually, WMA at 128kbps sounds better than MP at the same bitrate (although it hurts to admit it  ). With the right compression algorithm, perhaps someday 10kbps will be lossless, who knows?

My bad. I was going by this which read a long time ago, but it appears to have been changed.

10kbps wont be lossless, but a 10kb file might be :p

That was an interesting article. I can barely tell the difference between "lossless" WMA and FLAC anyway though :P
