Does anyone know devins vocal range?
I think devin has at times the most beutiful voice, at others the most powerful and also the most terrorfying.
I think he outclasses any other singer because he has such control over his voice and he has such a versitile(cant spell it) voice.
At times on the new black he could have been an opera singer and he still seems to have limitless power on those high notes.
Also his ability to switch between growling/screaming/beutiful singing is amazing!

It's weird as much as Dev is an amazing singer, live he can be rather hit and miss. But he's definatly one of the most emotional singers in metal.

That's probably because when he's in the studio, he can, like, do all the screaming parts in one song, then all the clean parts, and growls seperatley, but live he has to switch on the spot. Oh, and he also plays guitar and sings at the same time live, which is hard.

Indeed. When I listen to live SYL I'm always amazed by how much he actually pulls off . You gotta have excellent singing/breathing technique to manage that stuff, then add intricate guitar wankery and headbanging....Pheeewh!

Well I also think that when he's in the studio, he can, like, say "Hey that sucked, let's do it again"

I agree. I think that happens all over again: Some parts of his songs are very hard to sing and you know Devin Townsend, he's a perfectionist. It has to be perfect!

By the way, I love the voice of Devin Townsend. It has everything you want from a voice .

ive worked on a few albums/demos and the vocals are ALWAYS the hardest part to get right, and getting them right live is also a pain in the ass, switching your voice from a growl to a melody is really hard because you use different parts of the vocal chords and it can be a huge strain doing it which i think a lot of operatic/death metal singers run out of steam when they play live.

However, advances in studio equipment and computer programmes have made everything a lot easier, i just use a ton of layered vocals (cause my voice is crap) and a tonne of reverb and a spoonful of delay - and it sounds pretty good!

Dev's best vocal performence was CITY in my opinion
